Palm Foleo, Resurfaces? Rumour Mill

300px-Palm_Foleo While I wait for most of you to pick your jaws up off the floor, we’ll get into the Foleo from Palm. Does anyone remember it? A mobile companion that was set for great things, along the lines of the Celio Redfly, that never eventuated!

The original Foleo concept was meant to be a mobile companion that supported Windows Mobile and Palm devices. Announced on May 30, 2007, and renounced on September 4, 2007, the ill fated Foleo never eventuated. What did Palm have to say about it?

Foleo is based on second platform and a separate development environment, and we need to focus our efforts on one platform. Our own evaluation and early market feedback were telling us that we still have a number of improvements to make Foleo a world-class product, and we can not afford to make those improvements on a platform that is not central to our core focus. That would not be right for our customers or for our developer community.

What was a bit screwy at the time, was the mention of a second platform, meaning the Foleo was based on a Linux derivative. As we have seen of late, WebOS is Palm’s major focus. It looks like the Palm Pre will be available in early release at Best Buy, on June 7, but stock and location are limited, and a NetBook built on the new WebOS could be the next Foleo!

Why Should We Compromise?

I have been on a quest for the perfect cell phone/convergence device for many years now.  I am one of those users that hates virtual keyboards, no matter how good they are.  I just love a nice hardware keyboard.  Because of this I expect some compromise on the size of the device.  That is fine because I also like good battery life, so I do not mind thatmy phone is  a little bigger I can keep it powered all day.

I would also love to have a great camera in my phone.  I do not expect DSLR quality, or even the same quality you get out of a $300 point and shoot; but if a company has the technology to put a higher resolution camera in a phone, I would prefer it.  Apparently so does Twitter user ak2176:

Camera Question

So, what does HTC’s Twitter rep have to say about that?

Contest: Mastersoft Kakuro

This is a joint contest between Just Another Mobile Monday and What’s on iPhone.  In order to win, you will need to visit both sites.

photo1

For those of you who are not familiar, that is a Kakuro board you see above.  Pay attention, because you are going to need it for this contest.  Kakuro is from the same family is Sudoku, so some of the rules may sound familiar.  The basic point of the game is to fill the grid with numbers 1-9, with no duplicates in any row or column.  To do this, take a look at the numbers outside the grid. The numbers you place in each row or column must equal that number on the outside.  Pretty simple really.  The tough part is figuring out the correct combination of numbers for each row and column.  The more boxes, the more possible combinations will be available to you.

So, what do you need to do to win?  Take a look at the picture above.  You can see one clue has been shaded in red (11 with 3 boxes.)  All you need to do is write down all of the potential solutions for this clue.  Then, head over to What’s on iPhone, where you will find a second clue.  Write down all of the possible answers for that clue, and then send an email to admin@justanothermobilemonday.com, and include all of the possible solutions for both clues.  You will get one entry for each correct solution you enter.  But be careful, you will also loose an entry for any incorrect answers.

We’ll award at least 5 copies of Mastersoft Kakuro for iPhone.  Though we do reserve the right to add more winners if we want to.

Contest ends at 10:00 PM (EST) on Saturday, May 9.

Navigon Says Goodbye to the US

I have some very sad news, Navigon will no longer be selling their stand-alone GPS units in the US.  I am a big fan of their devices, hardware and software both.  I reviewed the 2000S two months ago.   Navigon is siting the tough economic climate and the pricing wars during the holidays in the GPS market as the reason for this decision.  They will still have an office in Chicago to support current customers with items such as map updates.  It appears the group’s new focus will be on getting their software integrated into smartphones and other cell phones.  Navigon currently has a contract with T-Mobile in Germany.  With the success of the iPhone, and the Palm Pre on the horizon, convergence is definitely a popular topic.  The question becomes, who’s next?

Review: SPB Wallet for iPhone

3

You carry enough around with you as it is, and it would be great to lighten you load by minimizing the things you carry and remember on a daily basis. i’m talking about the cards you keep in your wallet and the logins and passwords you have to struggle to remember.

Say, you’re already carrying your iPhone around with you, aren’t you? Why not just put them in there?

Well, that’s exactly what the fine folks at the St. Petersburg Softwarehouse had in mind with SPB Wallet.
