Skyfire Finally Achieves Escape Velocity: Beta No More

ScreenShot39

I have been following and writing about the Skyfire mobile web browser since its inception as a private beta with version 0.5.  Back then, it was a program with a lot of potential…much of it untapped.

Something close to a year (or more) later, the final version of Skyfire has finally been released.   Those of you who have been following along will likely recall that Skyfire is a different kind of browser.  It leaves your data on a centrally located server, rather than downloading it to your device.  In theory, this meant it could offer a lot more data, considerably faster.  The beta versions that I tested, however, did not always live up to this promise, often offering some significant lag time while loading pages or scrolling.

With version 1.0, that lag time is almost completely gone.  I have to say that I was really amazed when I went back and compared the early Beta to the finished product.  Skyfire has done an incredible job with this one.  And it does all that and more while rendering the full version of your favorite web sites, not the mobile version you may have been used to.  So far, this is one program that really seems to live up to the promise of those early Betas.

Watch for my full review coming soon.  In the meantime, you can download Skyfire free by heading over to www.skyfire.com or m.skyfire.com on your mobile device.  Skyfire is available for Windows Mobile 5 and 6 (touchscreen or non-touch) and Nokia Symbian S60 version 3.
