Ceedo: Tie Your Apps to A Hard Drive Rather Than A Computer
![]()
Have you ever had to take your computer in for repairs? What do you do when you have piles of work to be done, but all your information, including your applications, are on that sick computer? Well, for those who are prepared, they will be using Ceedo. Ceedo is a virtualization environment which empowers you to run your software off of a portable drive. According to a CNET discussion thread, external hard drives have a longer life expectancy than internal ones – so the use of an external drive is even better.
So let’s take a look at a basic scenario. My computer dies and I a Ceedo enabled external hard drive. I can technically just go to my local computer store or an internet cafe and plug in my hard drive and gain access to all the applications which I have installed via Ceedo’s installer called Argo. On that hard drive I also have a "My Documents" where I can store everything. Because it is a virtualized environment, all web browsing done from the Ceedo drive is private as all temporary internet files and cookies are stored on my personal drive. I can even lock down the drive with a password to prevent people from starting up my applications.
Backing up my Ceedo drive is simple. I can just copy everything manually to my computer or use Ceedo’s add-on backup tool for $10 which does the job for me. By doing so, I’ll always have a backup. If my Ceedo drive dies, it’s not a problem as my information is on my computer. If my computer dies, well…Ceedo is alive on my portable drive. If both dies…well…you could always start implementing some sort of cloud online backup such as Mozy, Carbonite, SugarSync, or SpiderOak to prevent such a disaster from occurring.
Ceedo works with most things that I’ve tossed at it but there are still some restrictions on programs such as non enterprise versions of Office as Microsoft’s activation would go crazy when using Ceedo. But for everything else I’ve tossed onto it from GameMaker 7.0 to TimeLine Maker Professional, I’ve been completely satisfied. Ceedo only costs a mere $40 and is licensed to 1 portable drive. The license allows you to transfer your license up to 3 times should your original portable device fail. Users of Seagate’s FreeAgent Go portable drives get a light version of Ceedo for free but an additional purchase of the Argo installer for $20 in order to run your own programs. Without the Argo add-on you can only run the programs in the Ceedo library online.
So next time, you run into computer problems, it’s not a worry as you can continue to keep chugging along…with Ceedo! A 45 day trial of Ceedo, Argo, and Backup are available.
