Palm Pixie, er Castle, erhm Eos…

palm_eos_engadget_1Doug posted the other day, well yesterday, “Is the Palm Pre 2 coming sooner than we think?”, woe and behold, this rumour seems to be getting fleshed out. seems like the second Web OS phone is going to have a form factor like the Treo, albeit with anorexia. A super slim Treo form Palm smartphone with an unconfirmed model name has appeared in the last couple of days, and it’s gone from blurry pics to quality pics to specs.

From Engadget Update: Oh boy — looks like we just got the full spec list. And yes, it’s definitely coming to AT&T (if it’s really coming).

  • 4GB storage
  • Price: $349 (pre-rebate)
  • Camera: 2 megapixel fixed focus digital camera and flash / video capture
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 w/ A2DP and EDR, USB 2.0 via micro USB
  • Removable 1150 mAh battery (4 hours 3G talk time)
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS (picture and video only), integrated IM client
  • Contact sync with AT&T Address Book
  • MediaNet
  • Cellular Video
  • Email: POP3, IMAP4, and EAS support
  • A-GPS
  • Audio: WAV, MP3, AAC, AAC+ ringtones
  • Video Playback: MPEG4, H.264, H.263

Quite surprising really, and it’s going to  AT&T, which is really interesting considering all of the Verizon, getting the iPhone and maybe some other Pink device as well. An opportune rumour, it might be said!

In my opinion it only makes sense that Palm put out a device in it’s most successful form factor, some would say “familiarity breeds contempt” but I reckon it breeds comfort. If this device actually comes to pass, it’s very exciting and may herald a step back towards the big league for Palm devices.

Palm Eos: super-thin, 3G, and headed to AT&T?

NIce update, Peter. This one actually makes more sense as it gets fleshed out. One of the big questions for me was why is this coming so soon. But the Pre is CDMA, which means locked to Sprint and US. This new one, if it is going to be released on AT&T would be GSM. In other words, this is the international model. Putting it head-to-head on AT&T with the iPhone 3 is an interesting move. That could end really well…or fall completely flat. AS for me, I will still be on the Pre on Sprint (I hope). ;)

Which reminds me, anyone taken their survey to see if they get tapped to become a “Real Reviewer”?

Breley, I took it and so did Heather. Not sure about anyone else from JAMM. Those accepted are supposed to be announced May 8, a week from today. :)

You’re in the wrong hemisphere, Peter. You’d confuse other bloggers if you started talking about your winter escapades while Doug talks about texting in the hot sun at the same time. :D

Palm needs to get something out to one of the big carriers. Looking at the response to “are you going to switch to Sprint?”, there was not an overwhemling response in Sprint’s favor. It has a touchscreen and a keyboard, which a lot of people will like. Look at all the Blackberry users out there. I know lots of them have said, I love my phone, but I wish it was touchscreen too. Maybe this is the answer. I would wait to release it a few months after iPhone3…let that buzz die down. Palm doesn’t have the power to compete with Apple. In hindsight, Palm should have hooked to Verizon…bigger company and more exposure.

Heather, I think you are just upset that this one was not released on Verizon. :) But when you look at it, Sprint and Palm have been working together for some time. So, I am not surprised. And since I am on Sprint…all the better. :)

Well, I still think it should have been Verizon, but I am biased. I am sticking with more subscribers makes sense.

I think I am actually going to switch to Sprint for the Pre. After talking to people at work, Sprint actually has the best coverage where I live and the 3G is faster than AT&T. I have always been a Palm fan (not fanboy) and I really want them to succeed mainly because I see webOS as the first mobile OS to really fit my device needs.

The more devices they get with webOS, the better dev support they will get as well since it shows that they are committed to the platform and want to get the devices on as many carriers as possible. I really think in a year or two, webOS is going to be cutting into the WinMo, Blackberry, and Android market share big time. I think it will steal some away from the iPhone, but the iPhone will still be the best media/gaming phone on the market.

Oh yeah…I also took the survey to becoming a “Real Reviewer” with Palm. I am also working on being a “Real Developer” for them too, but I can’t say much about that yet.
