Is The Palm Pre 2 Coming Sooner Than We Think?

Just caught this over at TechCrunch, and all I can say is Holy (you know what).  Apparently, someone let loose that a Palm Pre 2 (or related WebOS device) could be coming as soon as this fall.  Here is about all the information TechCrunch could offer:

The details are still slim – it’s a smaller device (and hopefully that means slimmer), but it will run Palm’s new WebOS operating system that everyone is raving about. We’re trying to determine if the device has a physical keyboard – no word on that yet.

Not a lot of detail, but it does offer quite a few areas of concern.  What could news like this, true or not, mean for initial sales of the Palm Pre?  A lot of people may hear this rumor and decide to wait for the new version (it is only a few months away).  I also wonder if Palm is not rapid firing their releases in order to essentially minimize the news cycle (or attempt to) of the upcoming iPhone 3.

Finally, and more importantly, what the heck is WebOS going to look like?  How will it work?  Most of us have not even seen a WebOS device, and this already makes the initial offering look obsolete.  Rumors, innuendo, and speculation persist.  Let us know what you think.

I had the first Palm Pilot with several AAA batteries that had an incredible battery life of several weeks and a little flip up antenna that allowed me to check email anywhere. It was ahead of its time.

The Palm Centro was the first device that I felt came even close to that initial b/w device. The one thing I absolutely hate about the Centro is a difficult to remove back lid. I am very sad to hear that Palm Pre-1.0 has the same problem. I am also disappointed that it does not have a removable Micros-SD card.

So, yes, I am waiting for Palm Pre 2.0 in the hopes that these are things are added/corrected.

Additionally, I am pleased that the Pre can be used as a PC modem, but I am disappointed that at present all these devices require a costly monthly data plan. I am currently \grandfathered\ under the original Centro plan that allows me to connect at will for data for $2 daily. That way I only need to use it as a modem a couple days a month and don’t have to pay $60.

I understand why phone companies have expensive data plans. Still, it is my wish that they do something on that score.

-. Removable Micro-SD card
-. An easier to remove back lid
-. Used as a PC modem
-. Ability to connect to data plan (pay-as-go)

here’s my input for a palm pre 2 version:

– faster processor (still slow on some apps/screens)
– 8 megapixel camera (like the omnia hd)
– video (720p record and playback would be nice since this phone, I believe, uses the same omap processor that the omnia hd does)
– bigger screen – nice to have a small phone, but screen size is just a tad too small
– amoled screen
– better battery life
– on-screen keyboard
– microsd slot
– compass! ;)

I can’t really disagree with any of that. Some of it may be wishful thinking, but it all sounds good to me. :)

2. Micro-SD
3. More memory/speed
4. Keep the keyboard and everything else

D. Strong, apparently one of the updates in the new WebOS 1.3.1 upgrade is the ability to process video. So, maybe we will see that on some upcoming hardware.

Well there may be a pre2 at some point. but for people that opened up new 2year accounts with sprint, like myself, and got the pre it would be a slap in the face to put a new model out any time soon. just like iphones, they will put the new phone out when contacts are ending to wrap us back in and we spend less moneys.

So we’re expecting a GSM pre in North American and a pre2. My question is whether or not those will be serperate releases. If we do get a GSM pre, the pre2 is even further away than we think, as it would make no sense to have two hardware releases in chronological proximity. However, to compete with Apple’s newest iPhone, said to be due for release in summer 2010, Palm will need to give us better hardware soon. The CDMA networks are quickly being phased out. The next pre that we see here in North America will without a doubt run on GSM networks, and I’m hoping that it comes along with my wishlist items of hardware revisions. I’m hoping for a pre that works on GSM/HSPA+ networks, and with updated hardware (better battery, better camera, faster processor, more memory, better slider, lower edges around the keyboard, better quality plastic). I also doubt that it will have a microSD card slot, since everything is becoming more “cloud based”, and there is little need for that kind of medium.
Some assumptions one can make are that the next iPhone will come with a second camera in the front (for video calls), a faster processor, more memory, multi-tasking abilities, improved multi-touch, and more “cloud based” services, similar to Palm’s “Synergy”.
As all networks are in the process of moving towards 4G, the network market is becoming more competative. All networks will provide comparable services, will carry the same devices, and exclusivity contracts on cellular devices will be much more expensive for service providers. So we can count on the iPhone, Blackberry, and Pre to be sold on the same networks, therefore forcing them to compete even more heavily. The pre will be forced to meet quality standards, and still be able to differentiate itself from other smartphones.

Wow, Canadian guy, you sure did cram a lot into that one comment. :)

Personally, I do not think CDMA networks are quickly being phased out. Here in the United States they tend to have much more complete coverage. both Sprint and Verizon have consistently better coverage than AT&T or T-Mo.

As for the Palm Pre 2, I think there are two things going on here. First, after the new year, you will see Palm branch out with its WebOS devices. I think they will hit Verizon first, since that is easy to go CDMA to CDMA, though I do not think it will take long to get it onto GSM networks as well. I also think you will see a WebOS 2, which will be a software upgrade. Hopefully that will get rid of much of the lag the Pre now experiences.

My personal wish list is something like the Pixi, only with a much larger screen. :)

As for the next iPhone, your guess is as good as mine, though that is quite a nice wish list you put together. :)

This is all well and good. I have the pre plus and although it is a good phone, it does not have voice dialing. I purchased it in July 2010 and my research has shown that this issue has been voiced by a large majority of the owners. HP has not issued a response or cure to this point. This tells me that the support of Palm/Hp is suspect. So buyer beware! To they’re credit, it is a nice sized phone with very good hardware, yet the final product has fallen short of the Iphones and anrdroids. It was my error in purchasing this phone and I must live with that decision for the next year plus. I have owned many Palm products prior to this purchase. They have been good. Maybe they should stay out of the smartphone market if they cannot get it right?

SEARCHING THE NOTES TO FIND A CONTACT. The Palm pre won’t do it, but the blackberry will. Regretfully I can not upload my palm desktop contacts to my Blackberry. If the new Palm pre 2 shall be able to search the notes for a word or two to help find the name of a contact if forgotten, then I shall send this bran new blackbrerry right back.
