Tweet Quick Notes With Evernote

Evernote_Twitter Evernote is one of the great note-taking services on the web right now.  It competes with Microsoft OneNote on desktops and laptops, but it has no real competition when it comes to mobility.  Evernote has a mobile web page that works with just about any cell phone that can access the web and has native clients right now for the iPhone and Windows Mobile.

One of the problems with using Evernote on mobile devices right now is that it is yet another program to load up anytime you want to make a quick note.  While the folks at Evernote have created great native clients, loading up the mobile website can take time and sometimes the mobile clients take time as well.

So, next week, Evernote is going to bring integration with Twitter to create yet another quick way to get content into Evernote

Read on for more details.

One of the great things about Twitter is that you do not have to have a client or web browser at all to use it.  You can set everything up so that you can use SMS messages on your cell phone.  This allows you to use Twitter on just about any phone on the market.  Evernote has taken notice of this and has been working on a way to get your tweets into Evernote.  This will be a quick way to send yourself a note or pictures.

CNet’s Rafe Needleman received a preview of the upcoming services and has a nice breakdown:

Here’s the setup. If you’re an Evernote user, you request to follow the Twitter user @MyEN, a protected account. The Evernote service approves you, and sends you a Web link with instructions for linking your Twitter and Evernote accounts. Once you’ve got the link set up, you can Twitter quick notes into your default Evernote notebook by sending a private (or “direct”, or “D”) note to @MyEN. Or you can copy your public Twitters into your notebook by tacking “@MyEN” on to them. If you send a Twitpic link to @MyEN the photo gets copied to your Evernote account as well.

If you use a nice Twitter client that allows you to quote or retweet, you can easily change that to send a direct message to @MyEN instead of publically posting it to send you something you want to take a look at later.  Twitter also allows you to make tweets as a favorite, but if you are an Evernote user, I think sending the tweet to @MyEN will be a preferred feature.

I will go ahead and admit it…I am officially an Evernote fanboy.  I use it on my iPhone 3G and my Palm Treo Pro to read the content that I clip from my computer.

How do you think Twitter integration with Evernote will help you enhance your Evernote usage?

I am a pretty big fan of Evernote too. At first, I thought this was pretty cool. But then I realized something about this new feature. Can’t you already send an SMS text message to Twitter from your phone? So, unless you want your note to be public, it seems like using the SMS text feature would be considerably easier than this.

I like it to the extent that lots of people use Twitter, but for me, I do not really see any value in Twittering myself an Evernote rather than sending an SMS text message.

Hmmmm!
It takes mere seconds to open and write a note in Evernote on my Fuze. In fact, I have pulled all of the other note apps off the phone because I find Evernote is fast reliable and always in-sync (Doug, don’t get any “Station Break” ideas here).

Why would I text or tweet to an intermediate? Just another potential security hole I would think (OK, call me paranoid).

I’m pretty sure you can’t just do a SMS message or MMS into Evernote right now. I checked my account settings and only see an email option. Maybe I’m just blind.

You have to step away from the smartphones for a bit and think of people that may use Twitter via SMS on dumbphones or feature phones. You do not have to make the tweet public…you can send a direct message to @MyEN and it will be sent to your account without being published in your timeline. It is just one more way that the Evernote team is reaching out to mobile customers and giving them options. Is it for everyone? Probably not, but I can definitely see the value in it.

I can see the value…but not for me. I am just not into twitter enough that this would make sense. But for someone who is really big into Twitter, i can see it.
