Bumptop – what Microsoft should be advertising

Alright, lets be honest here for a few seconds. Microsoft pays my mortgage. If it wasn’t for them , there would be all sorts of other server types out there and my mortgage would likely be paid by some other company, and while I don’t work directly for Microsoft I get paid to support servers running their real flagship OS… Windows Server. So, as much as I love coming home and working on a Mac, and as much as I love my iPhone and iPod Touch – I’m just as enslaved to Microsoft as you folks who come home to a PC.

Anyway, we’ve done a lot of jabbing back and forth recently about the Microsoft ads featuring Lauren and Giampalo or whatever the hell his name is. Here’s the thing: Microsoft shouldn’t be advertising on price. They should be advertising on what sets them apart from Apple. Maybe more like Apple does with the iPhone ads, they shouldn’t be focusing so much on what the PC is, but what it can do – and Bumptop IMHO needs to be the first one in line.

Check out the video above … If there’s one reason I can see owning a PC, Bumptop is it. There’s a free version as well as a $29 premium version available now!

Wow. That is way cool. I may need to go download it now. :) What is the difference between the free and $29 versions?

They have a breakdown chart on the site- but here’s the biggies missing from the freebie:
Sticky Notes Limit 2 on the freebie
Toss files onto USB keys – nope
Most used files automatically grow – nope
Flipping through Piles – nope
Thumbnail Previews (Webpages, PSDs, HDRs and more!) – Watermarked
Limited customer support.

I used this as my desktop for a few months since it was released as a BETA. Although it IS cool, and looks cool, it does NOTHING to improve workflow. Yeah it’s neat to be able to sling icons across your desktop. Thats where it ends though, a neat idea, but one that adds no value.

I use rocket dock and launchy as program launchers. They work well, allow me to open programs or files quickly, and lots of the time i don’t even see/use the desktop.

i work in IT, and have been for about 10 years.

trust me, no file system has EVER kept the average home user from sloppy file organization. rigid, file-and-folder structure doesn’t FORCE anyone to be more organized.

most people that i’ve helped seem to just save tons of random files in the same folder or all over their desktop, with no rhyme or reason whatsoever.

i can’t imagine what it’d be like trying to support those average users if they could ACTUALLY just pile junk up all over the place. my head hurts just thinking about it.

my wife’s computer crashed recently, and i had to recover her files… there was stuff —EVE-RY-WHERE— there’s no way i’d let my wife try this system, as i would be constantly trying to help her find stuff…

neat idea, but nothing really for -actual- function. i’ve found that the best thing is actually turning off all desktop icons, and working from a quicklist in my taskbar. that way i never even HAVE to look at the desktop. ever. now THAT’S function.
