Celio Announces Redfly Mobile Viewer

Most of you are probably familiar with Celio Corp. by now. They are the folks behind the Redfly Mobile Companion. You remember that, right? It looked like a laptop but had no operating system or apps inside. Instead, it was essentially an extension for your Windows Mobile phone. With it, you could project the contents of your phone onto the much larger (8 inch) screen, use the full QWERTY keyboard, and even charge the battery on your phone while you used it. It was a pretty cool device, with terrible timing. Right around the time Redfly started coming to the market as an ultra-portable laptop alternative, netbooks started making their big splash. Given the fact that you can but a netbook with a 10 inch screen for under $500, the Redfly Mobile companion seemed to have been squeezed right out of its own niche.
Well, you know what they say about successful companies: when faced with adversity, adapt to meet changing conditions. And that is exactly what Celio has done with their new Mobile Viewer. Hit the jump for all the details, and to find out how you can sign up for the new public beta.

What is REDFLY Mobile Viewer?
REDFLY Mobile Viewer is highly unique in its approach to unleashing your smartphone’s hidden potential. REDFLY technology changes the output screen resolution on your phone allowing you to see more information in a larger window (4 selectable resolutions from 800×480 to 1024×768 depending on phone model and available memory). No other software in the world gives you this great feature. REDFLY Mobile Viewer doesn’t just make your smartphone’s screen bigger, you actually get more screen "real estate" to see more of a website, email, spreadsheet, etc. – without having to zoom and pan around the screen.
Just connect your REDFLY-enabled smartphone to your PC, launch REDFLY Mobile Viewer and you’ll see your smartphone’s screen and interface running in an application window side-by-side with your regular Windows XP or Vista applications. Keep REDFLY Mobile Viewer running all day at work switching back and forth between applications as needed.
REDFLY Mobile Viewer also enables full input and control for your smartphone from your PC’s keyboard, mouse or touchpad allowing you to control the phone just like you would your PC.

The Mobile Companion looks like a neat device….but for the same price as the C7, I got an Acer Aspire One. It’s a shame, really, but at least the company had the business sense to regroup and adapt. Good luck to them.
PS: I downloaded and installed the beta of the Mobile Viewer. I may very well purchase this. I use an AT&T 8525 for work, and this would make certain things much easier.

Exactly, James. I really think Celio was the victim of really bad timing. They had a great concept to give you mobile access in an easier form, and it was much smaller and lighter than a laptop. Then, along came the netbook. I think the netbook really squeezed out what little niche the Redfly mobile companion had carved.
Peter has already downloaded the mobile viewer and is hard at work putting together his thoughts for a review.
