Unboxings.com launched!

Unboxings.com

There’s a new site in town, and those of you with boxes that you don’t want being opened had better keep them away from the computer. It’s being launched by Matt (from Tracy and Matt’s Blog) and Paul (from MoDaCo) These folks take their unboxing seriously and claim they’ll put up new content every few days. That means a lot of videos of new devices being handled, used, and even powered up right before your eyes. I just tried to to an unboxing video and found it pretty tough to keep talking coherently while trying to say semi-interesting things, so I’m probably going to have to look at some of these vids for tips and tricks.

The URL is simple: unboxings.com. So what are you waiting for? Get your box un.

I didn’t feel the Earth Move! Microsoft Promises…

imapcandimamacOne of the everlasting gripes that Windows mobile users have is the lack of development of the operating system. Also the way any updates flow on the end user. If you have a device supplied by any service provider eg; locked to a network, you don’t have a choice, unless your service provider, via the OEM releases an update to your device’s ROM, you are stuck with what you’ve got, unless you are partial to trying out cooked ROM’s from other sources.

With the price of current handsets tripling at times, the price of current netbooks, you could surmise that we would be seeing an upturn in the use of VoIP services, and therefore a lot of news about the aforementioned services, seems not. One thing Windows Mobile users are is loyal, and the “fit’s in a pocket  device”, Phone, is something that won’t go away, but what is Microsoft’s plan to assure an incredible device experience? Well the “Ballmer” of Monkey dance fame, is talking forward…

Review: The Cradlepoint PHS300 Personal Wifi Hotspot. Now Your Wireless Network Can Follow You Everywhere

IMG_3965

Let me just start by telling you how happy I have been with my iPod Touch.  It has been an incredibly versatile device, with games, music, videos.  You name it.  The only problem I have with the iPod Touch is that so much of what I do with it (other than games) requires an Internet connection.  This includes news channels, weather sites, RSS feeds, email, even syncing my tasks lists with Toodledo online.  And that says nothing about Safari or the App Store.  This need for the Internet is no problem when I am at home, and my wireless network is available.  But what about the 12+ hours a day when I am away from my network?  When I am on the train, at work, at the grocery store, or pretty much anywhere else?  Until now, that meant I was just out of luck.  I’d have to download everything in the morning or wait until I got home later in the day.  Well, now there is a third option, thanks to Cradlepoint and their Personal Wifi Hotspot.  Now, I can take the Internet with me everywhere I go.

Brandon updates GCalWall

photo

Earlier in the week, I reviewed GCalWall, the first (and hopefully not last) iPhone app from JAMM team member Brandon Steili.  He and I have spent a considerable amount of time talking about the included features and what is/is not possible on the iPhone.  Sadly, many of the limitations of the program (such as not automatically updating) are limitations imposed by the iPhone SDK, not Brandon’s technical prowess.  In fact, he is just as frustrated by some of these limitations as any of us.  Anyway, last night, iTunes finally pushed the new GCalWall upgrade to my iPod Touch, which I quickly downloaded and installed.

Internet Explorer Mobile 6, Want It?

teaser_internet_explorer_6 Eeny, meeny, miney, mo, with which windows mobile browser will I go? That’s the dilemma we all face when using windows mobile devices no matter what the flavour. Although the release of WinMo 6.5, which will include the latest update to IEM, wont be here till much later in the year, there are a few murmurs today around the intertubes that suggest that WinMo 6.1 users may get access to the new version. What the guys at PocketNow are calling 6 on 6. Now what they are selling isn’t quite kosher if you know what I mean, but what can we hope for on on the Internet Explorer Mobile 6 front?

Arne over at the Unwired View, today, posted the goods on what we can expect

According the latest confirmed information, Internet Explorer Mobile 6 will not become available to Windows Mobile 6.5 but also – as expected – to Windows Mobile 6.1. However, due to the application requirements it will not become available as a stand-alone update file (aka CAB installation) only but it will become part of Windows Mobile 6.1 AKU 1.4 and above.

So the system requirements will be, a device with 128Mb Ram [at least] and a 400MHz processor, without that IEM wont run on your device, but the biggest thing here is, will your device manufacturer provide a ROM update for your WinMo device? If you have a device that supports the system requirements, you are dependent on the device manufacturer to provide the update, not Microsoft, tricky eh?
