Review: Cellet Executive Case for the Blackberry Curve

For gadget lovers everywhere there is one point that I must emphasize over and over again:  Protection, Protection, Protection.  What good is having a shiny new device that no longer works?  Screen protectors are a step in the right direction, but a case is the ultimate.  Its the difference between having a bb gun for protection, or a shot gun.  For me, a case not only has to protect, but I want some fashion thrown in as well.  There is no law saying you can’t have both function and flair.  I put the Cellet Executive Case for Blackberry to the test.  See what I learned after the break.

Packaging

The packaging itself is nothing special.  It is just your usual clear plastic shell with the case inside.  I will give Cellet bonus points for using an easy to open plastic packaging.  The shell opens in half with very little effort.  Unlike the evil plastic containers that you need a flame thrower, machete, or a jack hammer to open.  I am always worried that I am going to slice myself on the hard plastic.  How stupid would you feel if you had to explain to the ER that you were trying to open up a package, and you injured yourself?

Features

The best feature of the case is the fact that they give you several choices when it comes to belt clips.  You can use the 360 degree swivel clip, the spring clip, or no clip at all.  I know many people who get annoyed with their case ‘moving around’, so this gives you plenty of nice options.  Opening the flap on the case reveals two things:  a built-in plastic screen protector  and on the flap itself a place to store an ID, credit card, etc.  The screen protector does a good job of preventing scratches, and since the Blackberry Curve does not have a touchscreen, there is no worry about feedback interference.

The area for ID/credit card storage is one of the things that drew me to this case.  I never go anywhere without my phone, so this way I know that I always have my drivers license with me as well.  You can easily fit two cards in the pocket.  They left the pocket a bit short so the entire card is not covered, which is a good thing because it makes it easy to slide your cards in and out.  No worries because the cards are in there securely.  As with most cases, there are openings along the sides, bottom, and back to allow access to volume buttons, as well as charging, headphone port and picture taking.  The front flap, which is great for protecting the phone, closes with a snap on the backside of the case.  I would much rather have seen a magnetic closure to eliminate the need to look at the case to close it.

Material and Fit

The case fits the Curve just right.  It holds it snugly without having to struggle to get the phone in and out.  The case is made from a high grade leather material.  However, you can definitely see a difference in the external and internal leather.  The inside of the case has a tan leather where you can see the grain of the material, as well as notice that rich leather smell.  The outside leather is black, and seems to be a cheap plastic/vinyl leather.  Now, I don’t understand why the difference in materials.  If they had used the same leather throughout, this would be a grade A product.  Without it, the appearance rates a C.  One little extra that is nice visually is that the case has black stitching on the inside and outside.

Conclusion:

For me, this case has more function than fashion.  It will hold up to the beatings of everyday life, but you will not be using it to impress your friends or clients.

Pros:  Versatile clip options, good fit for Curve, nice stitching, extra pocket for ID/Credit Cards

Cons:  Cheap looking outer leather material, snap closure
