Contest: PPCTechs Giveaway & New Website Features
Everyone should know by now who PPCTechs are, but just in case you haven’t heard they are one of the leading companies in converged device repair. They’ve been around pretty much since the dawn of the PDA, and developed the process of upgrading RAM in Windows Mobile devices. They also do a great line in accessories, including the WriteSHIELD® Premium Screen Protector and their line of Lil’Sync® power accessories and cables.
A lot of companies don’t listen to what their customers want, but PPCTechs do. After receiving emails requesting a search feature so that you can search by item or part number (instead of just by unit), they’ve added just such a feature to their website and want to give you some goodies for trying it out!
Hit the jump for details
The new search feature allows you to search by part number or product, instead of having to pick your unit first. You will still need to pick your device from the drop down list that comes up with the search results, but it’s especially handy if you know exactly what you’re looking for.
They’ve also added a link to the “Hot Deals” for each unit and have added links directly on the home page for the newer/most popular devices out there.
Go take a look around and in the comments here let PPCTechs know what you think. (Although I’m talking in the third person, I want to assure you that feedback is taken seriously and we really do make changes based on what customers have to say!).
Three lucky random winners will receive an item or items of their choice up to a $35 value.
The contest will end on Sunday, March 15th at 12.00pm PST
By entering this contest, you authorize Just Another Mobile Monday, and its representatives, to provide your personal information (such as, but not limited to your name and email address) to the sponsors of this contest should you be selected as a winner. Your personal information will not be sold by Just Another Mobile Monday, or otherwise retained for any purpose except that described herein.

Hmm, after taking a look, I have some positive and negative comments about your overall site. I am a web developer, so I have some understanding of what it takes for a decent and easy website.
The good:
+ Popular devices – makes for easy product selecting
+ Graphics are uniform across site
+ Being able to see cart and selected device at all times
The bad:
- The homepage seems cluttered with more information than necessary. It would be nice to have just a selection for your phone, then given options for other pages based on your phone.
- The red bar at the top has some graphical problems with the picture icons, as in the red of the pictures do not match the red of the bar, at least in Firefox.
The ugly:
– The horizontal bars on the upper top background have GOT to go. Makes it look extremely dated. Maybe a vertical smooth gradient instead?
– The logo has to be improved. I understand you cannot change it, but make it more in the front, more predominate, as you almost have to hunt for it now.
Overall, I would say a definite improvement with the search, and with a little more tweaking the whole site could really shine. User interface being easy to use and free of confusing boxes/windows/icons/pictures really is a plus over most of your competitors.
Good luck!

The new way of finding things works well for a specific device but it is still a bit awkward if you want to look at solutions that are available, regardless of device.

The site works well, makes it very easy to find something specific to your hardware. I like the red button on the main page, it does it's job well. Reminds me of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy too.
One little suggestion
– Select device -> click accessories on the right -> select an accessory -> then click accessories on the right again. Rather than going back to the full list of accessories as expected, it only goes to the category of the last accessory viewed.

The features are fine, but I couldn't really use it, tried to search "battery" and "supercapacitor", that are the actual things I'm looking for. No results. But in the "hot deals" I could find the battery for my Axim x51v. No supercapacitor indeed.

The supercapacitor would come under "backup battery", although right now that's not up on the site for the X51v. We do have it available though.

Bryan, thank you. This is the kind of feeback we like and need.

Hi geocacher, due to the number of parts available for a number of different units, we do still have to assign the part with an actual device. Your comments will be passed to the development team

We're working on that one

One quirk of the Search feature is that if I enter my device, in this case a Fuze, a list of compatible devices is displayed. I then choose a particular accessory from the device dropdown and get take to the appropriate page. So far so good. However, if I click the browser's Back button, I see that the previously chosen entry(ies) is still selected, so that I have to click *Select a Unit then click Fuze again in order to go back. What would be more intuitive would be for the list page of compatible items to default back to *Select a unit, because otherwise users end up doubling their clicks which can be a slight nuisance if you're comparing several accessories. This effect is cumulative, btw, so one could reach a point where all accessories show AT&T Fuze and each dropdown has to be clicked 2x again to get to that accessory item's page.
One other thing. If a null result in the search box is returned, the text "Webistic" appears briefly to the left and just below the search pane. Not sure if that is by design or not, just distracting.

the new search is very nice and works quite well. However it can be somewhat easier to use. for instace, if i’m looking for
x51v battery ,
the drop down at the next page seems redundant since it only contains one result.
thank you very much for really listening to your customers !

I never saw the Webistic thing after trying it from 3 different devices today, but I have passed it along.
But this is why we are asking for feedback! Thanks Breley!
We are well aware there are still some quirks in the system, one of the reasons for this contest. As staff, we can only test so much

Hi Darkcorner,
The drop down box may seem redundant, but all parts are assigned to devices and as much as we're working on it, it's difficult to get around it. Even "other" sites have you pick a unit after you've found the part you're looking for.
At least it's a kind of quality control

Sue, the Webistic text pops up in the desktop version of Firefox 3.0.7. This does NOT occur in IE7 (both on Vista).
A few of aesthetic observations:
1. On IE7, the right edge of the gray area at the level of most page's footer links (Home/FAQ Contact US…etc.) is offset to the left by 1 to 2 pixels. It looks fine in Firefox 3.0.7.
2. I wonder if the gradient color or text color on the home page for Featured Repairs/Upgrades/Accesorries needs to "pop" better, maybe similar in color to the orange Start Here or click here in the top center of the page.
3. Since I mentioned orange…IMHO the "Need Warranty Service for" click here buttons and the WriteShield's anti-GLARE and DETAILS color choice might look better if they were a consistent shade. if the color is part of the WriteShield logo and/or is a 3rd party product where that color is explicitly required, maybe change the Details button color to match the shade of orange elsewhere.
4. Details buttons on home page. I also wonder if the Details buttons in WriteShield should match the size and style of the other Details buttons below. It seems strange that one set should be orange and the rest be blue, and with either a tighter kerning on the text or a smaller size. Seems the font choice should be consistent, as should the button placement, i.e., the Full Service Repairs' & Mounting Solutions' Details buttons should be flush with the bottom of the bounding box as seem everywhere else in their particular grouping.
Okay, I guess that's a long-winded way to say the details buttons on the home page at least should be consistent in terms of size, font, and placement. Just my verbose $0.02.
