Free For All: Shake and Save for Windows Mobile

Screen001One thing about writing for a site like JAMM, we take a lot of screen shots.  When I started writing here, I had no idea how important a good screen capture program would become.  Now, when we bring you iPhone app reviews, taking screen shots is pretty simple.  There are only two buttons on the device.  Push them both at the same time, and instant screen shot.  Things are a bit more complicated on Windows Mobile.  While there are a lot of screen capture programs, none make it nearly as easy to take these pictures as the iPhone.  and of all of these programs, none are as creative and fun to use as Shake and Save from Extreme Apps.

Shake And Save is one of the easiest screen capture programs I have ever used for Windows Mobile.  All you have to do is start the program, and choose the format for your saved images (png, bmp, gif, or jpg.)  Oh and you will also have to agree that if you shake your device too vehemently and drop it, well, that is not the fault of the program.  So try to contain yourselves.  It would be nice if you could also choose where to store your pictures.  Hopefully that might come in a future version.  For now, your images will be stored in the Shake And Save folder under My Documents.

Once you have activated the program and selected your image format, the fun really begins.  Just navigate to the page you want to document and give your device a good hard shake (obviously, this will only work in Windows Mobile devices with a g-sensor like the HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, and Touch HD).   One thing I really liked here is that there is no timer.  Most device based screen capture programs give you a limited amount of time (usually between 2 and 10 seconds) to navigate to the page before the picture is taken.  I really like the fact that this one lets you take as much time as you need to “frame the shot.”

After your picture is taken, it will prompt you to close the program, or keep it active if you wish to take more screenshots.  It would be nice if you could change the screen capture format from this prompt, before you take your next shot.  The only way to do this is to exit the program and restart it.

I used Shake And Save to take a picture of the next Windows Mobile program I plan to review.  Here is a quick sneak peek.

Shake And Save is compatible with the HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch HD, or Samsung Omnia (and presumably future devices using the g-sensor).  You can download it absolutely free from www.extreme-apps.com.

You will have to wait and see. Though it should not be too long. This is the next one on my list, so I am hoping to have it finished next week.

Now if someone can just make an easier screenshot app for Windows Mobile Standard, I could stop tethering to my laptop to use MyMobiler so much.
