Quick Look: Vito Winterface 1.3!
With all of the criticism of the native Windows Mobile interface, and even though Windows Mobile 6.5 is coming it really isn’t an exciting option for most of the dedicated WinMo users out there. So the search for a better UI for windows Mobile devices, goes on, so we have the latest version of Vito Technology’s Winterface to have a look at, it may be for you
I had a very early look at Winterface, and put it on the back burner, for a later look, and now I’m happy to say I like what I’m looking at a whole lot better…
I have to say though, I find Winterface a bit alien, as it doesn’t integrate into Windows Mobile but runs on top of it. Winterface is a standalone shell for Windows Mobile, that runs as an application, the today screen plug-in is just a shortcut to the application. Of course though that is what a shell application should do!
Vito for a while, have been concentrating on a unified black theme in a lot of their programs, and with WF 1.3 there is a nice departure from the darkness, with a nice new colourful theme, including really nice, if iPhonesque, icons.
If you haven’t used WF before, you might want to have a look at Doug’s review of the original release, it might help you to understand, a bit better, the points I’m making here in this quick look, as I’m not going to go through everything the app has to offer.
WinterFace is not just a UI replacement it is actually a program launcher, as well, and this update includes the ability to add links to your browser favourites into the launcher. A really nice inclusion, I can go to any bookmark I have in one touch.
You can now add any amount of programs, settings, favourites etc to Winterface and the best thing is is it just expands. Winterface is like a concertina, the more you add to it the more screens you get that you can sideways finger swipe, and scroll through. giving you the ability to access all of the shortcuts you add.
The original black and white theme is still an option, and actually packs more into a screen than the updated colourful version. One thing I’d note here is the fact that WinterFace seems to be smoother and a lot less memory hungry, and laggy than I remember.
Vito are also evolving their finger friendly interfaces in a positive way with this release, it is definitely much more responsive on a resistive touch screen than before, and the links and menu options are all sans stylus usable.
I am really quite impressed with this update, there have been a lot of great features added, and major memory savings made, in running the application. It is intuitive in it’s options and settings, and is visually stunning in the way it involves icons that are not native to the program.
It just get’s better, and if you’ve had a look before you should take a tour again and see if it better suits you now!
Winterface is available from Vito Technology for $19.95, you can download a trial as well, worth a look if you are wanting a different way to interact with your Windows Mobile device.

Winterface is a simple and friendly application.
It focuses on storing the shortcuts in a flat structure but it’s very simple to navigate and operate it, which makes it a great addition to Windows Mobile.
One thing I miss: the capability to view appointments on one of the pages… I just have to see my meetings.
