HTC Twitters Touch Pro Release Info

OK, so I am a little behind on this one, but earlier this week, HTC shot off a few extremely interesting tweets (am I right that they are called, “tweets” and not “twitters”?)

Anyway, although HTC refused to give any specific dates, they did indicate that the upcoming Touch Pro 2 (which will receive a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.50 is set to roll out sometime late in the second quarter of 2009.  That means sometime around June.  no word on where in the world in will be released first, or when it will be coming to the United States.  However, HTC did promise wide availability of this latest device in all major markets, including North America.  This is fantastic news for everyone except users like me, who just purchased the original Touch Pro.

In a later Tweet, HTC went on to indicate that the keyboard on the Touch Pro 2 is one of the best keyboards ever.  Not that they are biased at all or anything like that.

Check out the video for more details on this fantastic upcoming new phone.

Coming Soon: gCalWall for iPhone/iPod Touch

As some of you may know, we at JAMM are friends with numerous developers of Palm, Windows Mobile, and iPhone apps.  what I suspect you did not know is that we have a developer living right here among us.  Our very own Brandon Steili, system administrator and reviewer extraordinaire announced today that his first app for the iPhone will be released to the iTunes App Store this Wednesday, February 25.

I had a sneak peek at this app, and I have to tell you it is really quite clever.  I don’t want to spoil any surprised for you folks, but I can tell you that this app does something which I know a lot of people will be happy to see.  Let’s just say that it takes your gCal or Google Calendar and puts that information on your iPhone Wall (ahem…lock screen…).  Hence the name, gCal Wall.

Says Brandon in his post over at Just Another iPhone Blog:

More important than just the app, I guess this validates for me that you can teach an old dog new tricks… a couple months ago the closest I’d come to programming in many, many years was some simple VBScript stuff, and the minor bit of PHP/HTML I have to maintain at JAMM. So, naturally I need to send a HUGE thanks out to all the folks who have taken the time to write tutorials for beginners, the folks who’ve written the books (specifically Erica Sadun, Dave Mark/Jeff LaMarche), and everyone whose taken time to reply to noob questions on forums. There’s a serious wealth of information out there for a beginning programmer and its all come to life in a matter of months – so THANKS!

So watch the iTunes App store this Wednesday for gCalWall (who knows, maybe Brandon will decide to give away a few promo codes).  and keep watching for Brandon’s thoughts on his experience with the iTunes App development process, as well as my extremely thorough hands on review.

Congratulations, Brandon!

Resco Contacts released!

Resco Contact Manager

Mmm, I really like the new generation of WM programs that are just getting more colourful, more animated, and more finger friendly. Resco has just released Resco Contacts for $24.95 (7-day trial available too). It looks a lot more streamlined than the default WM contacts interface, that’s for sure. I am a little surprised at the price, though. I know that Resco makes quality apps, but I also can’t help but wonder when the WM prices will start to fall to match other cellphone markets.

Full press release after the jumps and Resco Contacts website here.

Free For All: Torch Mobile’s Iris Browser

iris1 There’s been a huge amount of Windows Mobile Browser news over the past week, courtesy of the MWC. Also our friend Werner over at SmartPhoneMag has put up a full list of all the browser news, and his insights as to the current situation with Windows Mobile browsing. One of the  browsers, Iris from Torch mobile, is finally out of Beta and ready for public consumption, and it’s still free.

I have tried out Iris many a time through it’s development, and of course it didn’t last, install, try, uninstall you know the drill. Although, as with all mobile browsers, the rule of thumb is to deliver the closest thing to a desktop browsing experience on a mobile phone, as possible.

Market leaders in the Mobile browser world, Opera, have defined the feature set, paradigm, for what we expect from a WinMo browser, and all other browser developers, including Microsoft have been playing catch up for quite a while. As most WinMo users are using Opera mobile for a comparison platform for a browser, any software that comes close for free is going to be a viable option, in steps Iris…

The New Kindles Are Coming! The New Kindles Are Coming!

Capture2

I’m not going to lie to you folks.  I ordered my new Kindle 2 the second it went on sale at Amazon.  I ride the train ever day (over an hour each way) to work.  And the thought of carrying 1500 or more volumes in one slim device is extremely attractive to me.

Initially, when I ordered it, Amazon sent me a ship date of March 2, with it arriving in my grubby little paws sometime around March 10.  well, I received an email today indicating that my new toy had already shipped!  The new arrival date is March 2, and I cannot wait.

Of course, I am not the only one to jump on the Kindle 2 bandwagon.  Judie Lipsett from Gear Diary and Dan Cohen from What’s On iPhone also purchased the new Kindle on February 9.  So, stay tuned as the three of us will be bringing you a joint review encompassing all of our thoughts on what could be the hottest gadget of 2009.
