The Kindle 2: First Look and Unboxing

IMG_3804

The delivery date on my Kindle still reads March 2, 2009.  Which cannot possibly be right.  In fact, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that my Kindle 2 is not arriving on March 2, 2009.  I know this because there was a package waiting for me when I got home.  A full five days early.  And yet there it was.  Way to go Amazon (and the United States Postal Service).

Oh, but before we get into it, take a look at the side of the box.  This is the tab you pull to tear into the box.  “Once upon a time…” and we are off to the races…the reading races.

Firefox to sync tabs to Windows Mobile

thumb_450_picture-5

It was called “Fennec” before, but Mozilla’s WinMo browser is adapting a fancy new name we’ve never heard of: Firefox!

This foxy little thing will boast desktop-like browsing and also support for Weave, which syncs those pesky things like passwords across multiple systems. Just announced a cool new ability (not feature, since it’s a creature – rhyme!) that allows you to sync tabs over from your desktop version of Firefox. If you’re out and forgot about some information you had on your desktop Firefox you can now just grab it if it was in an open tab. It sounds like a pretty useful feature, although it seems like it’ll only be useful if you leave your other Firefox computers on.

All Things Terminalized

vterm

The other day while at work, a gentleman was accessing his Windows Server 2003 with an iPhone. That got me to thinking of my own use of remote access programs such as LogMeIn where I can log into my home computer to get some things done. Essentially, my device whether it be an iPhone (using something like Jaadu), a Windows Mobile PDA (with LogMeIn), or another computer with an internet connection has become a terminal. I can see and work on the remote computer and now, my resources are no longer limited to just a small mobile processor as I have potentially a quad core, hyperthreaded, Core i7 beast that will do my bidding. Sure, I may not be able to play a realtime game off of my mobile device as the shear amount of data throughput needed may be a bit too much and the lag would be unbearable, but a turn based type game or something that is not of the action/arcade series may play just fine – I’ve played "I Spy" type games as well as card games and turn based strategy with no problem.

N95 Runs Windows 3.1

upper_logo

We certainly have come a very long way in terms of computer technology. With computers the size of rooms to small hand held phone devices that do more than just telephony, we know that as technology evolves, some will be permanently phased out, while others will live on just like Murphy in Robocop. With emulation type technology, we see older platforms from Apple IIs, Atari, NES, SEGA, DOS, and more get new life as the new generation of computer users integrate the new with the old. I was quite thrilled when I saw Engadget link to a translated Polish article talking about running Windows 3.1 on a Nokia N95. This not only signifies that something is doable, but it also shows the power of our current cell phones and as well as a sampling of what is to come. And of course, if Windows 3.1 run under DOSBox on the N95, then we most likely will also have the capability to run all the other cool DOS games and apps such as WordStar or Maniac Mansion…life is good.

n95 win
