Windows Mobile and Palm OS on Your iPhone Roundup Part I: Astraware Games

Capture1

There are a lot of you out there switching from older devices, such as Palm OS, Windows Mobile, and standard non-smart phones, to the iPhone.  In fact, I think the ranks of the converts is growing every day.

As most of you know, I do a lot of the game reviews around here.  One thing I started noticing after I picked up the iPod Touch was that a lot of the games I see around the iTunes App Store are updates of games we have reviewed on other platforms, specifically Windows Mobile and Palm OS.  And that got me thinking, for a lot of you, switching to a new operating system and a whole new device can be a bit daunting.  It can be reassuring to have a bit of “home” on your new device.  Hence, a familiar game which can follow you from that legacy, outdated Palm device, or Windows Mobile phone, straight to your brand new iPhone or iPod Touch.  In this first part, I am going to feature a few games I found in the iTunes App Store that came from one of my favorite game developers, Astraware (note that this is not a complete look at Astraware games in the iTunes App Store, just a few highlights.)  All of these games were originally released on the Palm OS or Windows Mobile platforms.

GetSportz – Free Palm App I Can’t Live Without

When Palm first opened their mobile apps store, they had a few programs you could download for free.  One of them was GetSportz by Bluefin Wireless, and it is still available for FREE.  If you are a sports nut, like me (especially for my Steelers), then this is a MUST have.  What it does is give you the ability to check news, scores, schedules, and rankings on the go for the 9 major sports.  In case you are wondering, the 9 sports are:  NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, Auto Racing (more than just NASCAR), NCAA Basketball and Football, Golf, and Tennis.  You can set-up auto updates for certain sports of interests, and on the main menu it has a ‘Top News’ category that allows you to see all the major stories from all sports.  Honestly, I can’t live without this.  So, hurry and get this now while its still FREE!!!

Microsoft My Phone, In Pictures!

pc_capture1myphone Microsoft’s new My phone sync service, is still in Beta and it is well at best, offering up a variable service, for many users. The inconsistency seems to be at the online end of the service, not the phone end. I signed up for the Beta as soon as it was announced, and finally today, after a tweet from MyPhone, I went and tried to sign in again, and I was in. When Doug did his quick look a couple of days ago, he didn’t really talk about the time it takes to do your initial set up, and sync, and for me patience is a virtue, that i don’t have for the most part, So if it was going to take an interminable amount of time I’m very likely to cancel the process and write it off as a work in progress and come back when it gets less fail worthy. What actually happened for me was very similair to what a lot of people are experiencing, my data is synced, and there, but the online portal is not translating it the way it should, so it becomes a WinLose situation, I’ve successfully cloud synced my phone, but the ways I can manipulate that data online is my digital Achilles’ heel. So here’s a graphical timeline of the initial set up and sync, for your “I want to know if it’s worth taking the time to worry about this” pleasure.
