StationBreak: The Day The Music Died

February 3rd, 1959. A small aircraft took off from Clear Lake, IA heading to Fargo, ND. It never made it’s destination.

On board were 3 young men who were at various stages in their rock and roll careers; Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and Jiles P. Richardson – aka The Big Bopper. All three young men were killed, and as immortalized in Don McClean’s classic parable “American Pie“, it became known as the day the music died.

Along with American Pie, as this last week was the 50th anniversary of that tragic night here are three more songs the rock and rollers are best known by:

Ritchie Valens, Donna: Ritchie wrote this in honor of his girlfriend at the time. The flip side was La Bamba.

Buddy Holly, Peggy Sue: This song was actually written about one of the band members (Jerry Allison) girlfriends, who later became his wife.

The Big Bopper, Chantilly Lace: Probably the Big Bopper’s most well known song – by the way, did you know he was the person that coined the term music video?

“And as the flames climbed high into the night, to light the sacrificial light I saw Satan laughing with delight, the day the music died”

Quick Look: Resco Contact Manager Beta

pc_capture2 Got a heads up from Doug today about a new application from Resco, a Contact Manager still in Beta, that Doug said looks great. He’s usually right ;) so I thought I’d have a quick look, and to tell you the truth I’m not disappointed. It comes as a desktop install, that is straight activesync/WMDC compatible, installed to storage card without a glitch, and all of a sudden you’ve got a new today plug-in that gives you a lot more access to your system, than just your contacts, oh, but they’re included as well.

So this is a contact manager right, but as you can see, just the today plug-in, offers access to a large amount of information, and even system functionality. immediately, you have to go, an app that allows you access to your favourite contacts, call history, text history, and messaging, as well as all of your radio functions from the Today Screen is already looking real good.

Press Release: Astraware Presents Bubble Shuffle

Bubble Shuffle is Astraware’s new underwater word game for the smartphone community.  The challenge is that you need to create as many words as possible from the 4 bubble letters that are given.  As you advance through the game, the number of letters that are given increase all the way to 7.  You are also allowed to shuffle the letters to help you find more words.  The game consists of 4 different games, 2 timed and 2 non-timed.  For those of us who are wordly challenged, there is help available from Wordsworth Smartygills, who I am guessing is the little fish in the picture to the left.  I think this game would definitely make your Scrabble skills better, which I know is something I need.  I pretty much refuse to play Scrabble, because the only words I can ever think of are:  hat, cat, etc.  Bubble Shuffle is available for Palm OS, WM, and iPhone.  The cost is $9.99, and is available from Astraware

Review: Ion Audio Slides2PC Scanner. What To Do With All Of Those Old Slides.

IMG_3314

Some of our less young readers probably remember a time, not so long ago, when cameras were not digital.  These stone aged behemoths of the last century captured your memories on celluloid film, most likely of the 35 mm variety.  Of course, the problem with 35 mm film was that the prints did not maintain their color well.  Older prints were often yellowed, faded, and cracked.  The better way to archive your memories was with slides.  These created much smaller prints, which could be projected onto a screen when held in front a light.  Perfect for boring all of your friends with vacation pictures.

The problem today, though, is that as this technology was overcome by digital cameras, the tools required to display slides became more difficult to obtain.  Just try finding a good 35 mm slide projector today.  So, if you want to be able to view all of those old memories, rather than just preserving and archiving them in a shoebox, you will need to get them onto your computer.  For that, Ion Audio offers their Slides2PC slide and negative scanner.   Hit the jump for a look.
