Nokia And Samsung To Unleash App Stores During MWC

After the undeniable success of the Apple App Store, and other manufacturers and platforms jumping on the bandwagon like Blackberry, Palm, and Windows, we have recently had news of 2 other manufacturers releasing an Application Store.

The first one is Samsung with the Samsung Mobile Applications that will feature software for their Windows Mobile as well as Symbian S60 devices. It will be rolled out during Mobile World Congress next week, and although it will be limited to the UK at first, we hope that it’ll go worldwide soon after that. Developers who have joined the Samsung Mobile Innovator program will be able to publish their products in the store for free, and the store will be open to freeware as well as shareware applications. The store is already available online, so if you have a Windows Mobile or S60 Samsung device, you can already check it out.

The second one is Nokia, which is still an unconfirmed rumor. Unwired reported Eldar Murtazin’s affirmation that the store is under construction by Nokia. Apparently it’s running in closed mode, and is receiving updates very often to polish the experience. Eldar’s most interesting remark is regarding the relationship between developers and Nokia: “the distribution and revenue sharing model between app makers and Nokia looks very attractive”. If Eldar is to be believed (and he has given us reason to believe him in the past), Nokia should announce its store during Mobile World Congress next week to the joy of the millions of S60 users worldwide.

And here is my personal take on both stories: “about freaking time!”
