First Look: HP Mini 1000 Mi

Just a little while ago JAMM was contacted and asked if we’d like to review the new HP Mini 1000 Mi which is a netbook by HP running HP’s Mobile Internet Experience OS (homebrew Ubuntu Linux). Of course we’ll jump at the chance to bring you reviews of pretty much anything mobile, so saying yes wasn’t exactly a tough decision.

Over the next few weeks (or longer) I’m going to be giving my thoughts and impressions on the device I’ve dubbed MiniMe (get it?) but I thought to get things started I’d give you some pictures of what the Mini Mi looks like and what comes with it.

Yes, its a box. I couldn’t just give all the good stuff away before you even hit the break!

One of the first things I noticed when I opened the package was just how small this device really is. I was expecting small, but its been quite a while since I used anything less than a 13” MacBook so I was a bit surprised. We’ll cover more on the size in upcoming posts.

The “stuff in the box” line up is almost all of what you would expect. There’s a manual, warranty information, discount vouchers, a notepad? for some odd reason, user guides CD, power brick, 3 Cell battery and a microfiber cloth. Notice something missing? Like a restore CD? Yea, so did I. More on that coming up in a later post too.

The bottom. Exciting stuff eh? This is actually one of the first things’ you’re going to see since the battery doesn’t ship in the Mini Mi. Along side the battery compartment is a small door for memory. One slot only.

A look from the top. Yes it has swirls.

I actually don’t mind the design. I thought initially it would be something that bothered me since I’m much more of an Apple industrial design type, but since I see it all the time I’ve come to like it and how it fits very well with the theme of the Mini Mi as you’ll see in a moment.

Ports and buttons and sliders. We’ll cover all these in detail as time goes on. 2 USB, 1 funky VGA thingy, headphone/mic jack, RJ-45, HP Mini Mobile Drive port and SD card port

So, back to this theme thing. Well I mentioned that HP decided to go with HP MIE on the device and being a homebrew solution they’ve used one of the coolest ways to interact with the device I’ve seen in a while. Again this is something we’ll cover in depth over time, but since I mentioned the device “theme”, here is what I meant:

Naturally that doesn’t even begin to cover the device. I haven’t mentioned the screen, the keyboard, the weight, the specs and stuff like software. I promise all of that’s coming so stay tuned!
