Free For All: Hammer Time
I just caught wind of this one from our friends over at Just Another iPhone Blog and had to give it a quick look. Those of you who lived through the 1980s (and are proud of it) probably know where this is going. Hot on the heels of the Death Cab for Cutie App that Thomas told you about yesterday, another favorite musical icon has come out with his own application in the hopes of reaching out to new fans and attracting some old loyalties as well. Yes, that’s right, M.C. Hammer, who famously sang, “Can’t Touch This,” and “Too Legit To Quit” now has an App on the iPhone and iPod Touch. And really, I think this one is well worth the download, if for no other reason than the pure nostalgia.
This App has everything a budding (or former) MC Hammer needs to keep up with the once legendary rapper. Did you know that MC Hammer will be starring in a Cash4Gold commercial during the Super Bowl? No? Check out the news section of the app for all of the latest tidbits like this and others from “Internet Visionary” MC Hammer. Of course, this news feed does raise other questions, such as, “Is the economy really that bad that Cash4Gold is now advertising during the Super Bowl?’ Is it because their business has been booming or that Super Bowl ads just haven’t been what they used to be?” Also, “What does it really take to be an Internet Visionary like MC Hammer?”
Of course, if you are one of the remaining true fans of MC Hammer then you want to know when Hammertime himself is coming to a city near you. Now, I had no idea that he was still touring and performing. According to this calendar, however, after the super Bowl, he will be heading to Wisconsin, and then off to Disney World, before ending up in May at Cache Creek (I have no idea where that is, but I wish I was going to be there on May 2).
Finally, you can use the app to follow Hammer’s Twitter feed (I really am the last person on Earth to discover Twitter) or check out oodles of video clips, including the original U Can’t Touch This that made Hammer a superstar.
MC Hammer promises additional content in the intro to this app, and I certainly hope that is the case. I think this is a fantastic way to keep up with your favorite bands, and I can certainly see this as a growing trend. Imagine a simple app to let you know when your favorite band will be releasing a new album, touring in your area. Toss in some media and maybe a preview or two…and what band wouldn’t want to use your iPhone to connect with their latest fans. As for me, I am back to watching the original U Can’t Touch This video and going shopping for some new baggy parachute pants.
