Link Love: [Wired] Are netbooks killing PC innovation?

Fresh from posting a bit of news about the new Acer Aspire One I find myself wondering: have I just killed PC sales a little bit more? The argument that’s relayed in Wired’s article (which is actually from an HP tech officer) is that people are seeing netbooks as primary devices at a price of just $400 (give or take) and so higher tier PC’s are looking like luxury items. $1000 is the new $2000?

Personally, I think this doesn’t quite make sense to me. This isn’t an opinion based on numbers or trends, but just me and my Wind talking. I’ll never want to spend all my time hunched over the Wind and its micro screen. I start to miss my glorious 20” Viewsonic monitor after even an hour or two on the Wind. It’s a fantastic little writing machine, but I’m not going to get any gaming out of it, and I also don’t enjoy surfing or writing on it as much as I do on my desktop. There’s virtually no space to have to windows open side by side, and that’s one thing that anybody who references any sort of digital documentation is going to want – from blogging to writing essays for school, the larger the widescreen monitor, the better. Take a look at the picture above…you can see that the Wind barely even covers half the article, whereas my 20” monitor can handle Windows Live Writer and the article simultaneously.

However, if a lot of people are getting what they need for a mere $400 instead of buying $800 of laptop, why is that such a bad thing? Heck, it might even turn the computer market into something like the cellphone market where people buy a new phone every year or two.
