Update: Pocket Informant 8.51 from WebIS
Almost a year ago, Doug reviewed Pocket Informant 8, and although there have been a couple of point updates, a little nudge from Lauren today, points at a big update from WebIS, on what is their so called “Flagship” application.
From what I’ve read in the WebIS news release, this update really focuses on the back end of the program, making it less of a memory hog, and speeding up transitions and searches within the program.
Obviously there’s a lot more than that,
- Major Improvements in 8.51 from 8.0
- New Tasks Filter Screen
- Touch mode now shows larger buttons and screens
- Email Integration with Contacts Summary
- Send vCard from Contacts
- 12 Key Search for Pocket PC – this is like T9 for search
- Birthday/Anniversary Filter in Agenda Customize View
- Contacts rewritten so that it now is very fast
- Improved Events view with groupings and more options
- Improved Journal view with groupings and better view
- Improved Touch mode
- Major improvements to Smartphone all over the place
- SmartPhone now supports Linking
- Better one-handed usage
- Default Number (SmartNum) now editable in the editor
- A number of Template improvements
You can view a full list of the changes to Pocket Informant HERE.
It’s one huge update.

I have to give a big thumbs up to this latest PI upgrade especially the revisions to the Contacts function.
I have 2,400 contacts in my phone (yeah, I know, I should clean that out). I have used several contacts managing apps over the last couple of years to varying degrees of success. I have to say that the Contacts function in this new release of PI has become my default. It is very fast. The buttons are big and the – combined with the T9-like search – offer safer search and dial when I am driving…a big plus to my personal longevity.

@ Richard, as great as the update may be, I can't say it thrills me that it makes it easier for you to use your phone whilst driving.

@pedah, I see your point. I just use it for calling – and always with a BT headset. OK, I also use the "Show Traffic" function in Goog Maps. ;-}

These updates are great, especially the touch mode and the improved speed. I actually stopped using PI a while ago exactly for these reason, and I think that now I will come back to this excellent application.

I like the update a lot too, still think that there is room for improvement regarding the touch ui though

I'm looking fwd to PI on the iPhone although I'm honestly not sure if I'd use it. I remember PI being really cool but still too slow for me on WM — but maybe that was teh HTC TyTN talking.
