What’s up with the Zune?

There have been rumors and discussions all over the web about ‘the future of the Zune’.   Everyone has been crying that the Zune is dead, and MS is giving up.  Well, my fellow Zune fans do not be worried, because the Zune is here to stay.  This confirmation comes straight from MS, in the form of Adam Sohn, head of MS Zune Marketing Division.

“Basically, what happened last week, Steve [Ballmer] said a couple of things about the category,” said Adam Sohn, head of Microsoft’s Zune marketing division, causing speculation that Microsoft would stop making Zunes. However, he clarified, “we’re not getting out of the hardware business at all,” adding that Microsoft is “deeply committed” to continuing to its Zune hardware strategy.

In the near future, you will still be able to enjoy your Zune experience.  I also believe we will see the Zune software appear on other devices.  MS has already mentioned that it wants to integrate it in with the Xbox and Windows Media Center.  I don’t believe we will ever see a true Zune Phone, but we will see the Zune software run all of the media applications for Windows Mobile.  I am also holding out for the possibility for a ‘touch Zune’.  The first reason is that, well, I just really want one.  However, I think if MS could find a way to integrate the Xbox into the Zune, than that would be one awesome portable media/gaming device.  I can’t believe that MS hasn’t noticed all the money both Nintendo is raking in with the DS, and Apple is raking in with the iPod Touch/iPhone.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.
