Free For All: Tangrams (iPhone/iPod Touch)
It has been at least a week since we started a new series here on JAMM, and I thought it was about time to kick one off. So, here we go with a new series which we call: Free For All. This is an opportunity for us to bring you what you crave most…no, more than that. Yup, that’s right, I am talking about free stuff. Specifically, free stuff for your mobile device. The rules for this series are pretty simple…there are no rules. Well, except that everything we highlight will be free. You may hear from any of the team members here at JAMM, looking at games, utilities, pretty much any software…for any platform. Yup. we have writers here on the JAMM team kicking it on Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian, Blackberry, heck even Palm. So, sit back, relax, and get ready for the freebies!
To kick things off, I wanted to take a quick look at a game I just downloaded yesterday from the iTunes App Store, Tangram Puzzle Pro. Tangram is a classic puzzle game, in which you must arrange geometrically shaped tiles to match a silhouette outline. Tangram Puzzle Pro includes six unique puzzle packs, with each pack containing dozens of puzzles ready for you to solve. The most impressive thing about Tangrams is that every one of these puzzles uses the same shapes. That is an awful lot of arrangements for a square, parallelogram, two small triangles, two large triangles, and a medium triangle.
Gameplay was fantastic. When you begin a level, the silhouette is laid out before you on an empty table. The tiles are stored safely in a drawer. Just tap the arrows on the bottom of the screen to slide the tile drawer open and shut. This is a great touch, which allows you to keep the tiles accessible, but also move them out of your way when you need to step back and take a look at the bigger picture.
To place a tile, just drag it over the silhouette. It will automatically snap to connect with any adjoining pieces or the outline itself. Or, to get at all of the pieces at once, just shake the iPhone a few times and the pieces will all spill out of the drawer.
The other thing you will notice, when you drag a piece, a ring will surround it. Just drag your finger around the ring to spin the piece in either direction. There is no way, however, to flip a piece.
This is a fantastic game, which offers fun and challenge for players of all levels. It is also a fantastic facsimile of the classic puzzle game. But you had better hurry over to the Apps Store quickly if you want to check this one out. It is free for now…but that may not last long (and don’t forget to also check out the Holiday Edition of the game, which is also free for a limited time.)
I love being able to share amazing free games like Tangram Puzzle Pro (even if it is only free for a limited time) so be sure to keep checking back here for more of our favorite free software, brought to you straight from your favorite mobile platform (whatever that may be.)
If you have an idea for a free mobile application or game which you would like to see highlighted in Free For All, please let us know through the Contact Form.

This game is awesome, I just finished it yesterday. The later puzzles are quite easy (if they use the small triangle for feet and the square for the head, you have three pieces that are already given right at the start of the puzzle). But nonetheless, it helped me getting through the past week, and it’s quite a bit longer than I spent on some other (non-free) games.
So defenitely pick this one up.
Doug – as for free games, check out Trace and Jellycar, they’re pretty popular already but everybody should know about them.

I agree, SPM. It is a very well made game. Have you tried the holiday edition yet?
I do have Trace on my list. Tons of fun. And if you liked that, you should check out the similar game, Touch Physics. Not free, but still pretty cool. I have not seen Jelly car. I’ll have to check that out.

Yeah, in fact I first found out about the Holiday edition, and I then searched for the normal version in the app store, curious about how must it would cost. Of course I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that it was free.
I own Touch Physics, but after finishing it the day I purchased it, I played it a little more with different Physics settings and then never looked back at it.
After figuring out that you can simply draw objects beneath the ball in Touch Physics in order to make it go upwards, the game was quite easy.
Trace, with the 120 levels, gave me more entertainment value. I really like the concept of changing the physics in Touch Physics, but still it couldn’t hold my attention for long. If the “cheat” is forbidden in an update, and maybe new levels are added, I’d gladly revisit the game though.

I agree with you there, SPM. Touch physics was a great idea. But too short and too easy. I actually liked the concept of Touch Physics a little better than Trace. But with only 30 levels, most of which took me only a few seconds to complete…hopefully there might be a new version of Touch Physics with more and more difficult levels.
