Happy New Year: A Few Of Our Favorite Things
Posted by: dgoldring on Dec 31 2008 - 124 views
As we were counting down the last days of 2008, the team was discussing the best way to close out the year. In the past, we have done the JAMM Essentials list, which pretty much focused on Windows Mobile software. That was fine at the time, but it seemed horribly inadequate now, considering that less than half the team is currently using Windows Mobile on a regular basis. I am just thrilled with our newfound diversity around here. Our team uses virtually every platform out there for your mobile devices. In addition to Windows Mobile, you will find us using the iPhone, Palm, Blackberry, and Symbian. Pretty much everything except Android (and maybe we can add some Android coverage soon). But the point of all of this was that a list of our favorite software just did not make sense with so many different platforms to cover. Instead, the JAMM team would like to present a few of our favorite things. Hit the jump to see what we loved about 2008. and stay tuned to find out how you can win some of this great swag!

The (In)Famous Zune Swoon Just Gets Worse

As we start to see a little more (lame) reaction from Microsoft, today’s farcical, comical (if you don’t own one) Zune Swoon just looks worse and worse. Here is their latest reaction, via the Zune Thoughts site:
Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.
So the good news is supposedly this issue will largely fix itself when the date changes tomorrow - but as one of the lucky, lucky (insert your own very low and humorous number here) Zune 30GB owners round the world, this latest response from MS really winds me up for a few reasons …

Zune 30 Case - SOLVED!!!
Posted by: Heather on Dec 31 2008 - 9 views
The culprit was not a spy or someone disguised as a ghost, but a driver. To be specific, the guilty party is an internal clock driver that controls how the Zune handles leap year. The reason that only the Zune 30 was involved is that the driver effects a specific part that is ONLY in the Zune 30. The fix is easiest fix ever. Just let the battery drain down, and wait until after noon (GMT time) on Jan. 1 to re-charge and turn your Zune on. For more details, check out Zune Insideror MS main Zune site: Zune.com.

Review: Otterbox Blackberry Bold Defender Case
Posted by: Ragart on Dec 31 2008 - 34 viewsWhat do you do with a sleek, but vulnerable new Blackberry Bold? Sure, it’s easy to grip and has a chrome finish and a leather back — but what about drops and falls?! I remember seeing a post on Boy Genius Report about dropping a Bold and it didn’t end on such a good note. But that’s why Otterbox exists — specifically in the form of the Defender case for the Bold. It’s made of plastic and silicone and teaches your device some basic judo to handle falls.
But what happens when you put a slim and sexy Blackberry into an Otterbox? Will you end up with a Bold or a Boulder?

The Case of the Frozen Zune 30
Posted by: Heather on Dec 31 2008 - 32 views
Zune 30s everywhere are freezing. There are reports on quite a few sites, such as ZuneBoards and Zunerama. Zune 30s are freezing on the Zune intro screen with the loading bar at the bottom. At first hearing of this, I thought it was a hoax, but someone in my office has experienced the same phenomena. MS is aware of the problem, as there is a mention of it on the main Zune site via their support page.
Status:
Customers with 30gb Zune devices may experience issues when booting their Zune hardware. We’re aware of the problem and are working to correct it. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!
Stay tuned for this continuing saga. Where’s the Scooby Gang when you need them?

Another on the Bandwagon: Palm Apps Store
Posted by: Heather on Dec 31 2008 - 6 views
Well, it seems that Palm has taken another step towards the future with the addition of a mobile applications store. The Palm Mobile Apps Store has over 5000 programs that can be downloaded directly to your device, including 1000 free programs. A total of 25 Palm devices are supported for both Window Mobile and Palm OS. In order to have access to the store from your ‘Palm’, you simply need to download the free application. Palm gives you 3 ways to download the software: download from their site and then sync your device, type www.mypalmmobile.com into your mobile browser, or use the Palm mobile portal on your device, select MyPalm software to install. As a side note, these are the instructions for my Centro, you need to select your device before Palm gives you the instructions, so it could be slightly different dependent on what Palm you have. For an added bonus, Palm is throwing in a free application. Choose from either GetSportz, which lets you get scores, updates, and news on all 9 major sports, or Pinger, which lets you forward or reply to vocie messages with a touch of a button. All the directions on how to get your free app is available on the instructions page for your device. I have 2 things to say about this new mobile store. First, it is about time!!! It took Apple to think of it first before Palm made their own. How long was Palm the smartphone leader? Second, since Palm made the effort to create this mobile store, they obviously are not giving up on the mobile smartphone business. Don’t forget, big Palm announcement on Jan. 8!!!
