On-site review: Zombie Attack!

Resized 12

The zombies are coming, the zombies are coming! I don’t have much time to talk, so I’ve gotta make this quick. It’s a new app. $0.99 in the App Store. From IUGO. Zombies are everywhere and your only hope is to — oh god, it’s too late! We’ve got to get out of here!

Hurry, jump for it! Don’t think about it, just JUMP!

What’s going on?!

You made it! But we’re not out of the oven just yet. Here’s what I need you to do:

Take this iPhone and set up an angle that’s comfortable for you (in settings), you’re going to need to tilt it to move yourself around the screen. That little guy who’s NOT all pale and walking with limbs at odd angles – that’s you. I need you to set up a defense around the house (on the top-right corner of the screen) out of the four turrets we have available. It’s not hard to set them up, just (tap on one of them and) walk over to the spot you want to place them.

  • Guns shoot one target at a time, good range, but low damage
  • Fire turrets shoot one target, but just spit out the pain at close range.
  • Cannons hit multiple undead and make big messes; they fire slower but have good range
  • Axes are melee only, but they hit everything around them and I suggest you put one up right away!

You can’t set turrets up too close to one another so you can’t block the zombies with them, but I do suggest you try and figure out some sort of formation with a variety of turrets. I tried using only gun turrets earlier with a friend of mine…let’s just say I barely got away…and he’s one of them now. Each turret you put down costs more than the last, but you can always upgrade the old ones to do more damage, and fire farther and faster.

All you’ve got to do is hold off endless waves of zombies (that get faster and stronger with every wave you kill) until…well, just hold them off, ok? Let’s not think about what happens after. I don’t want to think about what might happen after.

How long do most fights last?

Well, people keep all their building materials and their supplies in the shack, so as soon as that’s gone, you could say it’s pretty much game over. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I’ve survived for up to five minutes before my shack was turned into scrap metal. But sometimes I’m just too tired to fight, so I press that (home) button on the iPhone and the zombies stop attacking until I’m rested enough to fight them again.

Sounds like you can’t get enough of it. Is it fun?

What kind of a question is that? There are lives at stake here! Did you trip on something on your way in? Yeah, that was my best friend!

No, really, is it fun?

Ok, yeah. It is kinda fun. Oh, who am I fooling? It’s a lot of fun! The way the zombies just explode when I hit them with a cannon or decapitate them with an axe – it’s like undead Christmas! If I lost a penny for every zombie I’ve toasted – well, I guess I’d have lost about 99 of those pennies by now. And it’s a price I’d gladly pay!

You can join the fight here!

So, it sounds like this is a Tower Defense style game. Awesome. I might have to check it out. There are several great tower Defense games on WinMo, but the iPhone seems much better suited to the genre. Nice review.

Doug, you’re a big fan of Azgard Defence, right? I hope this one fills the bill for the iPod Touch.

Ragart, your pre-jump lead in had me rolling on the floor. Hee!

Yeah, I think Azgard Defence is the top of this genre. I downloaded this zombie game yesterday, and it is a fun little game. But it is not nearly as robust (nor is it intended to be) as Azgard Defence. I would love to see Pocket More Games start developing their WinMo games for the iPhone. Their stunning graphics and touch based interfaces would be ideally suited to this platform. Plus, their games are just some of the best around.
