Day 1: Diary of an iPhone User Gone Treo Pro – Gmail

So, simple enough task it would seem to just do something as simple as setup your gmail account to sync with Windows Mobile 6.1 which runs on the Treo. However it turns out that since Gmail went to an IMAP setup instead of the POP3 setup it had for a loooooong time, WinMo needs a little fooling before you can use IMAP.

When you first setup your account if you put in your gmail account address (example@gmail.com) WinMo is smart enough to have all the settings it thinks it needs to make the connection work. Now in truth it does have all the settings… for POP3. Problem is if you want to use IMAP there’s no way around the wizard that configures things for you. Unless you play a trick on WinMo which is what I had to do. So for those of you who have Windows Mobile 6.1 and want to use IMAP for your Gmail account – here’s the information to make that happen. For those of you who aren’t sure why this matters – here’s a bit more information on the subject.

Play this trick: when you are first prompted to enter your email address, just type in some garbage like aaa@bbb.com. Then you will not be forced to use that automatic setup wizard (POP3); instead, select IMAP as the account type, then manually type in IMAP server and SMTP server addresses as described here. After that, go back to the account settings, change your email address to the real one you use with Gmail.

Well, yes, there should be a better way of bypassing that wizard.

Update: It turns out on Windows Mobile 6, there is a box you can uncheck to disable ‘Get Settings automatically from the Internet”. On 6.1, however, no such option exisit.

Here’s where I’d like to chime in and say how ticked off and disappointed I am with the default mail app on Windows Mobile. I have WM6 on my TyTN and the stupid thing just likes to keep deleting my emails (from the device only, thank god) whenever it pleases. I don’t know why, but as I keep refreshing and checking for mail more and more of my messages just disappear until I’m down to only the most recent ones or some such crap. It’s a huge reason I won’t go back to WM, as I actually like the default app more than Flexmail.

Ragart, you can actually change those settings. In order to conserve space, the inbox is designed not to store messages past a certain period of time. I actually really like that since I only want to be able to read a message and toss it. I do not archive on my phone. But if you want to be able to archive or save messages, you can change that setting in the account options.

I dunno :(

I’ve spent hours playing with the options before and Gmail just really hates me. Flexmail, on the other hand, would just keep my inbox stuff in the inbox. It didn’t auto delete or anything. I’m pretty sure this one’s just an Outlook bug. In any case, i’m not heading back to the TyTN anytime soon. The non-flush screen bugs me too much now.

I use Gmail on my iphone 3g..and it always worked fine, until all of a sudden it stopped working. It would not update my email and just say “connecting….” and then “cannot connect to imap.google.com”. It was so frustrating! I tried several things, none of which worked. Finally I got a tip from someone online to just go into gmail on my computer and change my password to something more secure. Up until then my password had just been a simple word, but after changing it to something with a number and longer word in it, gmail worked on my phone again. But gosh it was so frustrating when it wasn’t working.
