So far, in this series, we have not really had much of a chance to get into specifics about the individual players.  We’ve done a quick overview, looked in the boxes, even checked out the hardware and accessories.  But none of what we have looked at so far has had much to do with the actual use of the players.  All of that is going to change now.  The next two articles will focus on the user interface.  Today, we will be talking about the controls on each of the six players.  In the next article, we’ll be looking at a related item, the menu systems in each player.  The two really go together, and if it helps, we can think of this as part 1 and the next one as part 2.

Hot on the heels of the Thanksgiving sales comes JAMM’s (I’d say lightning, but that’s a Gizmodo trademark) review of yet another Proportan offering. Yes, I made the name into an adjective.

The 2G iPod Touch in my house was cold and alone after being purchased, but that all ended when Proporta kindly shipped me an aluminum (or aluminium) lined leather case from across “the pond”. The case has covered my device in leather and protected the screen with a sheet of aluminum. This review is the story of their relationship. So what is Nimbuzz? Nimbuzz is currently my favorite instant messaging software on the Nokia E71 and N82. It supports a huge (and always growing) list of instant messaging accounts, including: Windows Live, Yahoo, Google Talk, Jabber, AIM, ICQ, Skype and a lot more that I’ve never heard of.  It also recently added support for Facebook and MySpace chat.  If this isn’t incentive enough for you to hurry up and download it, then you might want to know that Nimbuzz also allows you to call your friends when they’re online, and by doing so, it either uses the 3G/WiFi connection to make an internet call or uses the GSM connection to connect through local calls (even if your friends live abroad).(...)

I’ve always thought of Proporta making cases to cover things and not bags. Clearly, when Proporta goes to the length of covering a device, they go all the way - whether it be a skin, case, or bag. Today we’ll be looking at Proporta’s Gadget Bag for Eee PCs. I was wondering what the difference between a case and a bag was and finally I got my answer. A case is just that, a covering which offers protection. A bag adds to that as it brings additional carrying capacity to the table with extra room for things like AC adaptors, batteries, and more.

To set the stage, a blast from the past, that did nothing to dampen the rumours of a Microsoft WinMo phone

Albeit a rather tongue in cheek look at a Microsoft device, more of a boomerang than a sleek phone, there is still a lot of wondering and speculation as to whether Microsoft will ever release a mobile device, or Zune Phone. A post earlier in the week at CNBC.com, seems to suggest that this is actually about to happen, and soon.

Until now, most of our Station Break installments have focused on music, but today’s media players can handle so much more than that, I thought it was time to mention one of the videos I have been enjoying lately.  And what better video to highlight right now than A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.

Most people who know me know that Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  yet, more and more it gets increasingly overlooked by many people.  It is just that day we get off from school or work which falls pretty much midway between dressing up for Halloween and trimming the tree for Christmas.  Lately, it seems like as soon as the jack-o-lanterns come down, the Christmas trees come out.  My favorite turkeys are lost in that crazy two month shuffle.

But I digress.  the point here is that while there are a plethora of Halloween and Christmas specials on TV, there is really only one Thanksgiving special worth watching, and that is the one starring Charlie Brown and all of his friends.

If you have never seen it, you really should spend the half hour you will need to sit down and watch it.  Your Thanksgiving feast will never feel the same after you witness Snoopy hosting his own Thanksgiving, with courses such as jellybeans, popcorn, and buttered toast.  Everyone should have such treats at their Thanksgiving.

So, check out this hilarious and fun Thanksgiving holiday special.  And I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving this week.  I certainly did!

I recently moved to a new state, and I’ll be spending most of my work life traveling. I’d been looking at purchasing a GPS device to use in my car anyway, so I was excited to take a look at one of Navigon’s latest and greatest, the 7200T.

Not long ago, I pretty much jumped into Cloud computing and never looked back.  While I still like Outlook 2007, I found it was starting to run slower on my Vista machine; and I could only access my calendar from one location.  Since the majority of my day is spent using computers other than my home laptop, this was beginning to become an unworkable situation. So, I switched my calendar to Google Calendar.  I am a huge fan of the Google applications, and this was a fantastic way to track my schedule from anywhere.   Now, it does not matter if I am at home, travelling with my Wind, at work, or even at a friend’s house – I can check it, and add new items from anywhere.

Of course, the inevitable problem soon arose.  How do I close the loop and sync my Google calendar with my mobile device?  I quickly found several solutions for Windows Mobile, but when I got my iPod Touch, I found all of the same problems recurring.  And none of the solutions I had found for Windows Mobile were available.  Until, that is, I discovered Saisuke.

Several months ago, Electric Pocket released a nice application for Blackberry.  It didn’t do much, just forwarded your text messages from your phone to any email address you specify.  Pretty simple, really,  But how useful is that? 

There are many reasons why someone may wish to forward text messages to an email address. txtForward is useful when changing to a new phone, enabling the user to avoid missing messages during the transition. It is also beneficial for those who prefer to focus on email as a messaging channel, or those who simply want the security of having text messages backed up with email - either on their computer or an online email account such as Gmail.

There are a lot of players out there with their takes on how your “main” screen should look. Some of them do it as simple today plugins, but others go much further. Winterface is one of those players that tries to take the WM touch interface to the next level. This newest update adds a fair bit of new content, chief among the new features being a today screen plugin. I’m not sure how this will work out, as I no longer use a WM device, but we did review Winterface when it first came out if you’d like to know more about it.

I’m not going to go overboard an an iPhone interface comparison here, but another one of the new features is adding favourite websites as shortcuts. That’s pretty neat!

MS has released update 3.1 for all Zunes, and it is available now for download.  This update is all about fun!!!  There are three free new games:  Checkers, Sudoku, and Space Battle.  Plus, Texas Hold’em has also been updated to include new levels of difficulty in single player mode, as well as a multi-player mode.  I love portable gaming, so this was a welcome surprise.  There is also a new feature for the Zune Social called ‘Like-minded Listeners’.   It allows Zuners to compare their musical preferences with other listeners and friends.  The Zune Social is getting a face lift, as well, to make navigation a little clearer.  The update is also suppose to improve device stability, performance, and PC syncing.  I hope we continue to see more updates for the Zune in the future.  When the device first premiered, it was quite awhile before we saw anything, so keep up the good work MS.
