Windows…Now With More Mobile Than Ever Before

I have to give Microsoft credit.  They have rightfully admitted that they were caught pretty much with their pants down when it comes to the Cloud applications.  Then again, no one really saw the power of programs like SugarSync, Toodledo and other applications with funny names that allow users to access data from anywhere and on any device or platform.  Unlike other areas, however, Microsoft has started to do a pretty good job of playing catchup.

Last week, they unveiled their much anticipated Microsoft Live Mesh, which allows you to store and access your data from anywhere.  At the time of its release (it is still labeled a technology preview), however, it was only available for Windows devices.  Mac OS and mobile devices were listed as coming soon.  Not much good there.   Well, the Live Mesh site has already been updated, and you can now sync your data with any mobile device that can access the Internet.  This is a great way to access your data from anywhere…on any device.  Check it out at www.mesh.com  or https://m.mesh.com from your mobile device (reportedly even from an iPhone.)

The second improvement Microsoft unveiled this week relates to its Windows Live for Windows Mobile service.  The new Windows Live includes some extremely nice improvements, including:

  • Contacts sync with Hotmail, MSN, or Live
  • Email via Hotmail, MSN, or Live
  • View graphics in web links and contact photos
  • Respond to your emails with voice recordings
  • Upload photos to Windows Live Spaces.

You can learn more about all of the new features in Windows Live over at the Windows Experience Blog.  To download, just point your mobile browser toward http://wl.windowsmobile.com/.  It is nice to finally see Microsoft delving into the Cloud a little bit more effectively.  They still seem to be way behind, but they are starting to catch up.
