You know that the iPhone has been hogging the intertubes lately, even if your a mushroom, you couldn’t miss it. What about that elusive gPhone, what’s that film quote “if you build it they will come”? The Android dreams that everyone latched onto, have not come to fruition [unintentional pun], but a post at TechCrunch today points us to a possible, actual, gPhone. Can you believe it, Google may have actually bitten the bullet and want to challenge anything with a small letter. If the favicon update earlier in the year was anything to go by, we may be looking at a small g phone.

But today Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergei Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt made nebulous statements that are leaving us wondering if Google is now thinking of building that gPhone: “The trio of Google execs also used the opportunity to talk about the inroads the company is making with its own branded mobile phone as a replacement for the iPhone.”

So is that lower case upstart on the way?

The  post at TechCrunch references lots of things, and one interesting link is to a device manufacturer, called the Ammunition Design Group. Great design is one thing, a great OS is another. While most of us would welcome another competitor in the mobile OS wars, are we realistically waiting for the gPhone, or are we expecting HTC to keep their corner of the device market.
