Australia’s Optus iPhone plan: no unlimited data either!

Posted by: Ragart on Jul 05 2008

knifePeter, our Australian connection, sent me info on the Optus plans for the iPhone 3G. I took a look at the website and then got really, really confused with the wording and titling of the plans. Apparently ‘YES’ is the actual branding of the data/voice plan, and you can say yes to a 3G iPhone for $0 as long as you take up one of their offerings. I won’t get into the details of the plans because, frankly, I don’t understand them. I will tell you this though, they’re still beating Rogers with a $0 iPhone and a two-year contract. It’s funny though, I thought it was pretty standard to offer unlimited data for higher-end phones, especially the iPhone.

C’mon, Optus, you call that a data plan? This is a data plan!

Thomas, You didn’t mention the prepaid pricing, which is really a better option than the $0 upfront contract.

    8GB iPhone 3G (Black)= $729

    16GB iPhone 3G (Black or White)= $849

Plus, connect to Optus Pre-Paid and receive $400 Bonus + 1GB internet browsing PLUS recharge with $40 or more on Turbo Cap and receive EXTRA BONUS data every time you recharge!

To get you started Optus Pre-Paid is offering a special offer - unlimited mobile internet browsing on Turbo Cap^ until 31 August 08.

    That’s AUD

The pre paid plans are pretty good

    Welcome to Australia.

I’m not even the slightest surprised. Mobile data here generally sucks. Unlimited? Yeah right.

I’m on Optus PrePaid. Presently there’s no data included and no way to get any. The rates are 2.2c/kb and 1.1c/kb on weekends. That’s $22/mb and $11/mb respectively.

It’s a joke really, I have to use data very sparingly. The alternative is to sign onto a plan which usually means a 2 year contract - and the data is still expensive.

That’s interesting, I’m not seeing those prices reflected on my Optus pre paid!

Those are the prices stated on their site (for TurboCharge Prepaid).

It’d be nice if they did include some data in all of their prepaid plans, instead of just the >$50/mo TurboCharge.
