Beware The Fake FireFox 3
Thanks to my friend Konstantin Kalinin from Vito Technologies for sharing this one with me. As most of you have heard, yesterday was download day for Firefox 3, and Mozilla did everything they could to make sure you remembered to download it. Everything, that is, except upgrade their servers which strained under the pressure. As a result, a number of users were left waiting for extremely slow downloads…or completely unable to connect at all.
With the Firefox servers straining under the pressure, many of you searched the Internet for alternate download sites. Great idea…or so it seemed. ZDNet’s Ed Burnette is now reporting that some of these sites may not be all they appear. In fact,he personally saw one such site which downloaded a purported spyware program instead of an Internet browser.
Please be careful out there and remember that if it doesn’t come from the official website or getfirefox.com, then you may be downloading much more than you bargained for. Please be patient…and be safe.
