LiveWires: The Road To Custom Fitted Headphones Part 1

Since I have been writing here (and at Gear Diary and My Today Screen), I have had the opportunity to review hardware, software, accessories…you name it. Through all of these opportunities, my favorite review item has always been headphones. I love the way music sounds when it is played through a good pair of headphones. Even more, I love reporting back to you what works and what simply does not.
Although I have had the opportunity to review a wide variety of high quality headphones, the one review which has always eluded me has been custom fitted headphones. Custom fitted headphones differ from ordinary, even high end, headphones. They are custom made to fit only your specific ear. Not only does this significantly improve the sound quality and noise isolation; it also means your family members will not be hounding you to let them borrow your headphones.
Well, I am very excited to say that, thanks to the good folks at LiveWires, I am now going to have the opportunity to review a pair of custom fitted headphones.
Here is how LiveWires describes the difference between standard and their custom fitted headphones:
You’ve listened to Sgt. Pepper’s hundreds, maybe thousands of times before, but you’ve never really heard the instruments, the tiny nuances, the emotion of the musicians like you will when you hear it with LiveWires. LiveWires are like a personal concert for your ears.
Imagine someone took your music collection . . . cleaned it, polished it, and made it brand new. There are notes you’ve never heard, emotions you’ve never felt, and a new Journey you’ve never taken. It’s like your brain has been wired for music.
That’s what happens with LiveWires . . . it’s music for your brain!
LiveWires also is a division of EarPeace Technology, a manufacturer of hearing aides. What this means is that they know ears…inside and out. They have (or at least they claim) to have made a headphone which is significantly better for your hearing than any other (and at a third of the price). Of course, we will be putting that claim to the test. But before we get there, we have a few things to take care of.
First, I need to go to an audiologist and have impressions made of my ear. I’ll be doing that on Thursday. Once I have those impressions, I will send them along with an order form, to LiveWires. After that, it is just a matter of waiting for the big day. Since purchasing these headphones is considerably more complicated than the normal method of select colors and await delivery, I thought I would write about the whole process. This was my first post. Next Thursday, after my appointment with the audiologist, I will post again, and I will continue keeping you apprized of any significant milestones throughout this process. Of course, this will all culminate with a full hands-on review of the LiveWires custom fitted headphones.

Hmm this will be interesting.
And the audiologist will get reviewed on a tech site as well! Maybe he/she will want to read this as well.

I already have a pair of custom fit earbuds made from molds of my ears. I purchased them about a year ago. They are the most comfortable earbuds that I have ever tried and I tried quite a few. As stated above, I too had to go to a hearing aid person. The molding process took about 10 minutes. I purchased a less expensive alternative which enabled me to attach my custom molds on to my iPod earbuds but they also can fit on other manufactures earbuds. The company sent me information on where to get the molds done the next day after I ordered. I purchased online from Earsound Customs. Not sure how they do this but, one really cool thing is that once they make a mold of my ears I can purchase any other product without getting molds taken again.

I'll have to check out Earsound Customs, wayne. UNfortunately, my contact at Livewire fell through and I never did get these headphones. What a disappointment.

Oh no, Pedah. This was a review unit. I had been talking to the President of the company. And then I wasn't. Not really sure what happened there. I would still really like to finish this series with another company.
