Now This is Mobile Technology! part 16

GPS is becoming more of an integrated service in most mobile phones, whether it be great or not people are starting to rely on these services to get from point A to point B. Now GPS is becoming something rather common, even the rumours about the Next iPhone confirm GPS today, Oh and 3G.

It’s pretty easy to forget that GPS devices are actually becoming standard equipment in most new vehicles, as well as handsets, and most of us have an expected format for the device to take.

Hand held GPS devices are becoming more prevalent, but our normal take on a GPS gadget is something like this

You wouldn’t expect a plush covering

This is something you wouldn’t expect, but what if your GPS was linked to a device that reacted to your physical state at the time. Now the Idea of BT and GPS hands free systems, should be becoming the norm, for drivers everywhere. So when you come upon a device that only provides a distraction you really have to get it out there.

So after you’ve been having a great conversation with the Pink Elephants in the bar, you can jump in your car  and your GPS device can Keep you on track.

I think not, this little  Teddy Bear is a GPS device, that resides on your dash and points you in the right direction.

Apparently Ted can also detect if you have been drinking.

The robot bear is also equipped with functions to improve auto safety, such as an alcohol detection sensor embedded in its neck. If it smells booze, the robot confronts the driver, saying, “You haven’t been drinking, have you?” Other sensors detect reckless driving, so if the driver suddenly accelerates or slams on the brakes, the robot says, “Watch out!”

As a bonus feature, the robot bear provides information about nearby landmarks when you stroke its head.

The company hopes to make the robot commercially available next year. “We want to make it more compact,” says CEO Fuminori Yamasaki, “and we’d like to offer a variety of shapes, including other characters and a plain mechanical version.”

Do we really need devices like this?
