Resco Explorer 2008 out for PPC (and Palm OS)
One of the best tools for the PPC just got better — Resco Explorer 2008 is out and it’s rocking some new features. I’m no Palm user, so I can’t really speak for the improvements or features there, but the PPC side of things certainly got some touching up.
Among the biggest new features are:
- touch controls — read: finger friendly!
- virtual folders — even easier than the folder shortcuts?
- customizable toolbar — I’ve wanted this for AGES!
You can snap the program up for $29.95 or likely upgrade it for a lower price if you bought 2007 recently (not sure on the details of that one, but if you know please post here
). I’m very, very pleased with the new look of Explorer 2008, and I’m really enjoying the trend of finger friendly programs on the PPC. Huzzah!
A full list of changes can be seen on Resco’s forum post here.
edit – make sure to check out JNGold’s info below about the release. You might want to stick to 2007 for a bit, based on the Resco forum feedback…

I am a Palm user and it looks to me like Resco Explorer for Palm definitely is hurting in comparison to the WM version based on the OS is has to deal with. Palm doesn’t have a built-in explorer (and most of the free add-on ones only handle the storage card), I don’t think it has a registry to edit, and it seems to deal with managing and launching files differently. Palm is user-friendly on the surface, but it’s tougher to get down to power user functions.
I’m drooling over the new WM version. May have to think about getting it for the Axim…

Upgrades are free if you purchased less than a year ago, 50% off if it was longer. http://www.resco.net/support/faq/?faq=upgrade

ahhh, thanks. I did look at the PPC Resco Explorer FAQ, but didn’t go to the general FAQ.
And yeah, I agree with you on the palm side of things. But I think Palm in general really, really lags behind, and has been for years. I remember my Tungsten T3 and TCPMP and Resco Photo Viewer. The palm version looked like crap compared to the PPC version, and the features differences were unbelievable.

When I read comments/stories like this I really wonder if the person posting the story actually uses the application. Anyone considering purchasing/upgrading to 2008 for the WM PPC, should go over to the resco forums and read the various bugs and issues people are having with the app. In some cases, some major functionality that was present in previous versions of Explorer is now missing in the 2008 version. The problems go as far as the beta testers begging Resco NOT to release the app due to the severity and number of issues.
Caveat Emptor!

@JNGold.
that is very useful insider information you’ve given us! A good warning. And although I always do research (I did go to the forums, but i only hit up the release post this time), there has to be a cut-off point for how much I dig into something for a news post.
That being said, I used to be a big Resco 2005-2007 user on the WM platform (took part in some of the 2007 public beta), but I’ve since moved to another mobile platform so I don’t personally check every news post by putting it on my TyTN (except for the occasional old review that’s been updated).
In any case, thanks for chiming in with that. See you around.

I have just visited the Resco forums to read about the complaints. To be honest, I first couldn’t believe that there were so many complaints. My experience with Resco Explorer 2008 has been very good.
However I’ve indeed found that there were lots of complaints. But on a positive note: on several of the topics, the developer has replied saying it would be fixed for the next version. And I was also told through e-mail that a minor update is scheduled for release in 7-10 days already.
On top of that, I wasn’t able to reproduce must bugs, so they might have been fixed already with a newer version. So I would suggest everyone to re-download from the Resco website, they’ve apparently uploaded a newer version (even though it still says June 2nd).
There are some small issues, such as the inability to re-order favourites and the fact that Tree View can no longer be enabled from the View submenu. However, these things have been brought under the attention of the developers. They are taking this feedback into account and are considering to make changes here.
People may read my review about the new features of Resco Explorer 2008 here:
http://spmwinkel.wordpress.com/2008/06/06/resco-explorer-2008-new-features-review
Of course I won’t simply advertise Resco Explorer, I do think that with the amount of discussions on the forum users should be careful and thorougly explore the application themselves too, before purchasing.
Have a great weekend all!
