Dell to Downsize!

Posted by: Peter Murphy on May 29 2008 - 178 views

Well I’ve never really heard of this event before, it’s called All Things Digital, and it’s a short [two day] get together, showcase of all things digital. Not only devices but media as well. Checking out the website I see a whole heap of info about a fellow Australian called Murdoch, who may have a little bit to do with the medium, although I’m not sure the input has anything to do with innovation.

It seems though the D event draws a lot of big industry hitters, from Ballmer to Gates, Zuckerberg and Dell. Mike Dell actually, and what better way to leak a new Dell "really small, compete’s with the EEEpc sort of" device, is to walk around at an event like this with it.

The fact is though, that the images above are Dell released images, for a real rendering of the device, you have to go to this Gizmodo post about this little intrusion from Dell.

Netfront…Browser v3.5 for Windows Mobile Concept Version

Posted by: Peter Murphy on May 28 2008 - 507 views

Crap, who made me the Browser watcher?  Netfront has been updated and no one knows about it, until now. I really like the way they have called it a concept version. When I first posted, took on the Beta, I was really impressed by some of the features of the Netfront v3.5, and I thought some of the features were fantastic. A couple of rom flashes later, I’d forgotten all about it till I got  an email from Access the other day. The Beta has been updated with some new tweaks and some responses to things people weren’t quite happy with.

New Features

  • Speed Improvements
    • Faster first draw speed
    • Faster scrolling
    • Faster zooming
    • Faster rendering mode switching
  • Swift Navi.
  • Animated zoom
  • PageMap
  • Column Rendering

The nicest thing about the Netfront browser is the scrolling, other than that the configuration settings are numerous and confusing. The opposite of the Opera browser I was looking at the other day. It’s worth checking out, but you’ll need to take a hiatus from work to set it up!

It’s Important To Vote - For a Keyboard Skin!

Posted by: PatrickJ on May 27 2008 - 409 views

GestaSkin

Many of you will recognize the name spmwinkel (or Stefan) - as he is one of our most frequent and favorite commenters here at JAMM - and a very frequent past contest winner as well.  He was also one of our first ‘Show & Tell’ participants - you can check out his entry HERE.

Stefan has recently entered the Resco Keyboard Pro Skin Competition, and voting in the competition is going on right now.  Up for grabs for the winner is an HTC Touch - and it would be just great to see Stefan win this, for his very sleek skin work!

So … if at all possible, take a moment away from thinking about silly political elections, and make your way over to HERE and vote for Stefan’s creation.  Just look for ‘Gesta Skin’ by spmwinkel and hit the Vote button (assuming of course that you agree it is deserving).  Your IP is tracked, so stick to just voting once :)

Good luck Stefan!

In the mood for something suite?

Posted by: ssschmidt on May 27 2008 - 567 views

review

May I present for your tasting pleasure, The iWindowsMobile Communication Suite

Ever been walking along and decide to make a quick call, and you have to drag out the silly non writing pen just to find the person’s number?. Or, your phone beeps, you have a text message and want to respond, and then realize (shudder) that your stylus is gone?

Windows Mobile Professional Devices (Touch Screen) are moving more toward finger friendly every day. Sometimes it just isn’t convenient to drag out the stylus. So what do you do?

Recipe:

  1. Start with a WM Professional Device.
  2. Add in equal parts: Goodwin, Fun Contact, SMS-Chat, and Zoomboard.
  3. Do Not Shake or Stir.

Now for the taste test. And you even get to use your fingers.

Review: Will "Wild Gears" Drive You Crazy?

Posted by: weiganla on May 27 2008 - 777 views

Jamie Squire/Getty Images (from ESPN.com)It was a wild race. My car wasn’t the fastest on the track, but thanks to some pretty slick driving — hey, it isn’t bragging when it’s true — I was holding my own. I had good position and there weren’t that many laps left. Not long before I would make my move. I was guiding my racecar down the outside of the lane, minding my own business. Suddenly some careless idiot blunders all the way across the track and sideswipes me, throwing me into a spin that ends with my car wrecked and me seriously ticked off.image

No, I’m not Danica Patrick, but I feel her pain because that’s what happened to me playing Wild Gears the other day. Only after my racecar was totaled, it regenerated and instead of stalking down pit row looking like ten gallons of kick-tail in a one gallon jar, I took off after that sorry schmuck and returned the favor.

The latest release from mobile gaming powerhouse PDAmill, Wild Gears is a loving homage to retro RC racing games. I can’t remember that far back, but the four cartoony racers and 15 bright, whimsical courses did remind me of Mario Kart. There are even power-ups! A realistic driving simulation Wild Gears is not, but that’s not the point. What really matters is: is it fun? Read on to find out!
