To Blog, or not to Blog.

The numbers are staggering.  Blogs are everywhere.  What did I do today.  Where am I going.  Where did I hide the body……  Needless to say, you will find people blogging about EVERYTHING.  There are many different services available.  Some are free, some aren’t.  But when you are on the move, how can you post the rant that’s been building all day long?

I know there are many blog sites / services.  I’m picking one to talk about.  Live Journal.  But wait.  This is Just Another Mobile Monday!..  This is supposed to be about Mobile stuff.  Enter "Six Apart Live Journal Mobile".

What is LiveJournal?

LiveJournal is an online journal service with an emphasis on user interaction. A basic, fully-functional account is free while Paid accounts receive access to premium features.  Comparison of the accounts is here.

From the Live Journal website: "LJ Mobile is a free application for your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 (Smartphone Edition and Pocket PC Edition) or Palm OS Smartphone that allows you to post an entry or photo to your journal while on the go."

"LJ Mobile allows you to easily post a LiveJournal entry from your mobile device, as well as any of the following:"

  • Add a photo to your entry
  • Add a tag to your entry
  • Create a customized list of tags for use with your mobile device
  • Upload a photo to ScrapBook without making a journal entry
  • Select the security setting of your entry

Installation is a snap. As I have a Tilt, this discussion will cover the WM side only.  Copy ye-old cabinet file to your device, and select.  You can choose to install to the device, or a storage card (if your device is challenged).

A-LJinstall

Once installed, just find & launch.

B-LJSelection

When the software is launched for the first time, it will take you immediately to the log-in screen. Simply enter your Live Journal username and password, and off you go.

Below is the main screen.  The icon surrounded by orange (Color challenged here) indicates a post on your device.  The text field at the bottom indicates either publishing idle (device is connected and ready to go), or paused.  Paused allows you to edit your post offline.

As seen, by selecting the tools soft-key you have several options.  All are self explanatory.

C-LJTools

As for the Preferences menu, you can control how much data remains on your device, whether to delete pictures after syncing, and control the type of post (Public, Friends, or Private)

C-LJToolsPrefs C-LJToolsPrefsArchive

C-LJToolsPrefsPublish C-LJToolsPrefszNewpostprefs

When posting, via the "New Post" selection, you can choose to post to your journal or scrapbook, and tag the post with the appropriate buzz words.  The subject defaults to the current date, but is highlighted for easy replacement. Again, at the bottom, you can select the type of post (Public, Friends, or Private).

The tools menu gives you the options of going straight to your camera, adding photos from your storage, and of course, deleting or cancelling the post.

D-LJNewpostStatus

You can select sync status to determine if everything worked as it should.

Finally, posts made on your device will remain (as selected in the options), and can be edited, or removed from the device.

For anyone interested in blogging on the go, this is a good and free solution.

True there’s MoBlog and Pocket SharpMT, but both require some setup that’s not easy without instructions. I wrote an article on Pocket SharpMT here: http://spmwinkel.wordpress.com/2008/02/04/blogging-on-windows-mobile-pocket-sharpmt/
