Impressions: Flipside music player on Windows Mobile

Screen13Blackberry users have been enjoying the Flipside music player for a good little while now, but it’s time for the WM junkies to get in on the action! The great thing is they’ve adapted the interface for smartphone and touch-screen users, so both camps can get their flip on.

Flipside brings a cool album art interface to the field, complete with the ability to flick through your entire collection with the d-pad or a flick of the screen. If you don’t have the album art, Flipside says it can download it for you.

One promising thing about this software is that it seems to really focus on the UI experience, which is something a lot of the good companies are doing for WM. It plays MP3′s and WMA’s.

Check out the 3-day trial here, and if you like it, it’s yours for $19.95! I took a look at Flipside on my TyTN, so hit the jump for some quick impressions.

The first thing I noticed about Flipside was the size of the .cab file and the final install. It’s about 150 kb. It’s small. That’s pretty amazing — but does that mean that there’s not much to the program itself?

Yes and no. There’s still the attraction of a rather swift slideshow-style album art interface. You can d-pad click or tap on the album art to reveal the songs in that album. When you start to play a song the interface goes full-screen, and one cool extra is that it redraws quickly on an orientation change (something Pocket Player still struggles with). One rather strange bug I have at the moment is that ALL the artist names are the same, no matter what album I browse to. On top of that, all the song names in each of my albums are the same. Obviously something’s gone wrong in the database of the program, but I didn’t do it :) . I just booted the program up and it was like that from the start. I think a little more bug hunting is in order here.

The "no" part of the equation come with the interface itself. There really doesn’t seem to be much else to it at the moment. The softkey menu shows. In fact, I’ll just show it with a screenshot:

If you’re an equalizer fan or looking for some other way to sort your music, Flipside simply doesn’t have these features yet. The song progress bar also could use more work: it’s only shown by a very small green line at the bottom of the screen, but it’s never explained to you that that’s what it is, so it’s easy to miss.

In any case, I’m hopeful they’ll improve upon this interface and fix it up. I think it could use a bit of prettying up to catch up to other offerings like Pocket Player, Coreplayer, or even Pocket Music –  but it’s good to have something else out there. As it is, it remains the best attempt I’ve seen at a cover-flow style UI for Windows Mobile music. Cheers to that.
