The iPhone Is Going StyleTap Dancing

StyleTap, the Palm OS emulator, has finally released an official announcement that they are planning to add an iPhone version to their lineup. This will allow applications made for Palm to run on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

A couple of months ago the company posted videos showing a "concept" version of StyleTap for iPhone. Apparently there were some kinks with Apple, and StyleTap wanted to gauge interest so they could work out a deal. After racking up over 800,000 alternately drooling and irritated viewers ("Why even put this up for view if you have no intention of making an emulator? Just to piss people off?"), looks like they got one. They’re promising more info in July.

What a relief. I was holding out on the iPhone, but now that I’ll be able to run HandyShopper on it, sign me up! Seriously, I’ve got a Palm and I don’t know any applications that would keep me tied to the platform. If there really are programs that good out there, I feel like I’m missing out!

US Smartphone Market Looks Like BlackBerry Pie

We do a lot of debating around here about which platforms and device makers are best. But one thing we can’t argue about is which is most popular: it’s BlackBerry by a mile. Going by just-released figures from an IDC report, RIM more than doubled the Fruit Company for United States smartphone sales in the first three months of 2008. Also, Americans hate Nokia.

There isn’t a breakdown by OS, so who knows how many of those Palms were Treos running Windows Mobile — but Palm’s market share jumped by 70% over last quarter and their only new release was the Centro running Palm OS. Samsung seems to have gotten a boost from the Blackjack II, while the MOTO Q series is struggling. And all of HTC’s assorted fabulous devices? 4.1% of the market. Unless I’m forgetting some models, if we guesstimate a 20% market share for Windows Mobile, maybe a quarter of those devices have the touchscreens all of us here at JAMM love.

What we define as mobile devices, well it’s broadening. When we think about hand held devices, Palm has become a generic name. The term Palm Pilot, is the Most common reference to describe a PDA of any sort.

Well I got an old device handed to me the other day, and I have to question the ultra mobile portable computer. There are many of them that are not still in use and the trend towards Mids or small laptops is a reinvention, a re-visit if you like of times gone by.

The Pro Calc from Texas Instruments is one of those early hand held devices.
