XP Version of The Eee PC 4G at Best Buy for $399 Next Month
Posted by: PatrickJ on Mar 30 2008 - 479 views
The much-loved Asus Eee PC - with Windows XP and a 4GB SSD - is due to be coming to Best Buy in the US in the first half of April at a price of $399, according to LaptopMag.com. So just a very few days before you can look out for one, and still at a pretty nice price.
This model of the Eee will run XP Home, and has the 7-inch screen, not the larger one that we’re hearing a lot about lately. It’s also got the built in camera for video chat, 512MB of RAM, and some (pretty lame) bundled software - MS Works and Windows Live.
Read on for the rest of its specs and a link to LaptopMag’s demo video …

SPB Screenshot, Free.
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Mar 30 2008 - 453 views
Here’s a quick tip for a freebie. SPB Screenshot that used to be distributed as part of SPB Imageer has been liberated, and is available as a stand alone application for free, at FreewarePocketPC.net. I’ve been over to SPB’s site and I can’t find it there, but it became available at FPPC on March 26. So if you want a useful little utility, head over and pick it up.

Review: USBFever Wifi (Hotspot) Detector.
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Mar 30 2008 - 581 viewsHaving recently changed ISP’s, and not having my Data plan associated with my phone, Axim x51v via BT DUN, I have become dependent on wireless access for all online functionality with my device.
There are plenty of open networks where I live, at least two that I can connect to at my local train station, waiting for the commute in the morning.
It’d be nice to know when your near a network that you can connect to without pulling out your device though, so offered the chance to have a look at USB Fever’s Wifi Detector, I thought I was killing two birds with one stone. SO, how did it fare ?

Gadget Wish Lists To Match Tax Refunds
Posted by: PatrickJ on Mar 29 2008 - 191 viewsIt’s tax season in the US, and hopefully lots of you have either already got a refund check, or are looking forward to one arriving soon. For gadget lovers, this may be the only time of the year where you can really splurge and add a new toy or two to your collection. With that in mind, Steve Laser has a great post up at Mobility Site, titled ‘Tax Time Toys‘ …
According to USAToday.com, the average tax refund in 2005 was $2436. Expect that to grow 8-10% for this year’s refund. In my fantasy world I get to actually spend that money on gadgets. What should I buy?
Steve goes on to list ten high tech items he’d love to buy with that sort of refund amount. It’s a very good list too, with a good variety of items - from a hot new HTC device through to a *serious* power camera, and maybe one or two items outside the normal gadgets sort of realm.
Check out Steve’s list HERE and see how tempted you may get by some of the items.
I’ve already spent part of my refund on a shiny new MacBook (hurrah), so my biggest wish list item now would be this little beauty:

The Time Capsule wireless station / external backup drive to use with Time Machine backups of the Mac.
How about you all? Got any gadget purchases planned with your refund money? Share what’s on your wish list …

Wikipedia Hits 10 Million Articles
Posted by: PatrickJ on Mar 29 2008 - 212 views
A little off topic, but I think it’s worth taking a moment to digest that the 10 millionth article has been written on Wikipedia. The ’sum of all human knowledge’ is going strong with articles written in 250 different languages now.
It’s a fabulous resource of course, and one that is also increasingly easily available to us when we’re mobile - through our mobile browsers and even some custom applications for Wikipedia viewing (there’s a 2.5GB native iPhone app for this, for example).
Do you access Wikipedia often on your mobile devices? If so, what are your favorite ways to do this?
