This is a cool phone for those committed to T-Mobile but finding their coverage at home in the office a little “sparse”. I’ve been using the 8320 Curve for about 6 months and it works nearly flawlessly over WIFI.
When I walk into my office it instantly connects to the router — and all my calls go over WIFI. I cannot tell the difference in call quality.
Here are a couple tips about how the Hotspot @ Home plans work:
1. You do NOT need to subscribe to Hotspot @ Home in order to use WIFI / UMA to complete calls (you will need a Blackberry plan though)
2. If you do NOT subscriber to Hotspot @ Home – all of your calls on WIFI come out of your normal bucket of minutes.
3. If you do subscribe to Hotspot @ Home then all your calls are free when you are connected via ANY WIFI connection.
4. Starbucks and other T-Mobile Hotspots work flawlessly (and free) with Hotspot @ Home devices. Rules # 1-3 above apply.
5. I have found that WIFI browsing is NOT much faster than regular EDGE.
6. Hidden trick that (I think) many people use this device for is that if you are overseas — the calls back home via WIFI are all free since the device via WIFI has no idea it is overseas (whereas if you use regular cellular you pay big for minutes, roaming, long distance).
One of the problems with Hotspot @ Home is that in many areas the native cellular coverage is sparser than competitors. So when you leave your WIFI coverage area – you better hope the native T-Mobile coverage is good.
T-Mobile also now has to compete with the other carriers and their $99-ish unlimited plans.
Tip: Sprint’s $ 99 unlimited plan not only includes unlimited voice, SMS, MMS but ALSO includes the Blackberry Internet Service (normally $20/mo from other carriers)…..which makes Sprint one of the best deals for anyone using a Blackberry that needs unlimited minutes.
