Essential Apps… What can’t you do without?

image Funnily enough I was going through my feeds today, in NewsBreak, and clicked on the read more link which opened up Opera, so that I could read a post on Smartphone and Pocket PC Blog about the Coolest Applications on the Windows Mobile Platform, by Mike Riley, and then reading further, came across, a comment from Nate Adcock, and realised that these guys were going to all do a post about their most essential WinMo apps!

We (the SP and PPC Mag bloggers) have been asked to give an accounting of our favourite apps and services this month. Hmm, so many great services and programs to pick from these days…hard to know where to start? I stopped counting at around 50,

Now the whole team is posting their Faves,, and it’s really worth a read, but then I thought, they are considered experts and it dawned on me, ” An expert is just a drip under pressure”. (ex spurt)A play on words I know, but I want to hear from you, the everyday user, as I also consider myself. Now I’m not only talking about Payware, Freeware as well.

Ok , I’ll start, When your browsing using the D pad, every time you encounter a search or text input field your SIP activates,[default keyboard pops up], and obscures at least half of your devices screen. One of my faves is a little app called NullKeyboard, it is a SIP that isn’t. It nullifies all SIP’s and let’s you get on with browsing!

So what can’t you do without?

I always like these discussions – I’ve probably seen the apps that are mentioned most but quite often people list small tools that are not known by everyone.
So, apart from Resco Explorer, Newsbreak, iLauncher etc, I´d like to give special attention to Device Lock by Armstrom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305402

It lets you map the device lock to a hardware button so you can save some Today screen space and easily lock the device also while walking. I simply press-and-hold the PushToTalk button and my screen is locked!

This is the great thing, all of the little bits and pieces that get overlooked, or found by everyone!

I have become dependent on the Technology Preview of EverNote for Windows Mobile.

As far as non-widespread software goes:

PCMKeyboard (gee, what’s that Ragart? Is it an SIP?)
Skweezer.net for quick surfing (not software, but awesome)
Pocket Player 3.51 (Bah to Coreplayer for now! It doesn’t even play mp3′s properly on my TyTN!)

I took a look at the roughly 30 apps (man, where did all of those come from!) and asked myself if I could only reinstall three of those, what would they be? Then, if I could add a second, and so forth. I decided my top three were SoftKeys, Pocket Breeze and Voice Command. I have an 8125 (Wizard) so without SoftKeys there is really no way to have one-handed navigation and I would really miss that. I could live with the built-in plug -n for calendar entries but I hate the way MS displays tasks, so PB made the cut. I use the phone a lot when I am driving and hence VC, although if I were really stripping things down I may go with some other voice dialer as that is the only thing that makes VC so high on my list.

My next four, couldn’t get to three, were Resco, Opera Mini, iLauncher and Roboform. Resco versus the builtin file explorer? Enough said. Same for iL. For months I could never understand the attraction of OM, and then I tried it with a new midlet manager and wow! What a great little app. I am using it and Bloglines moreso than Newsbreak now. Roboform lets me take all my user names and passwords with me wherever I go. Very handy when OM dumps all my cookies. :-)

My essential app is Elecont Weather. It has the most precise hour by hour forecast and animated icons on today screen.
