I like many have been under whelmed…..

imageOk, as many people have been disappointed at the lack of evangelical mobile news and devices from the CES this year, I’ve been looking around for overlooked stuff. As we know 2007 CES was somewhat upstaged by the “Jesus Phone”, but in response, most mobile developers had an array of underdone, if not fantasy device prototypes to try to keep up. So we didn’t get much from CES this year, seems iRiver have the best looking prototypes. Something I missed completely until today, is that Skype has actually added a huge amount of mobile capability in the recent past, and really bells and whistle functionality.

You may want to have a look at the amount of technology that Skype have introduced lately, cause they are really doing stuff, quietly, without fanfare, that is going somewhere fast! Possibly their silence indicates a commitment to getting things right before they set off the fireworks.

* Freetalk Wireless Stereo Headset – This new Wireless Stereo Headset, enabled by the new AvneraAudio technology, delivers CD-quality sound and the freedom of hands-free Skype calls at any time. It offers superior range (up to 20 meters) compared to technologies such as Bluetooth, freeing you from your desk to make and receive the full range of Skype calls while moving throughout your home or office.

* Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices – Mobile users will be able to make Skype voice and video calls and send instant messages on the move, while harnessing the PClike performance of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) based on Intel low-power processors and chipsets. This new category of small, truly mobile consumer devices with WiMAX and WiFi capabilities will enable free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls and cheap SkypeOut calls to be made on open wireless networks.

Go and have a read of this post at MobileTechNews, there’s more to have a look at, but Skype is doing well!

Skype really needs to make a better Windows Mobile client! The current one (as far as I know) doesn’t even make calls on the HTC TyTN! I had to look back and download an older version.

And the tabbed chatting in Skype is pretty badly done. The funny thing is, they had it better (again) in their older versions. All the contacts and tabs were on one long tab menu at the bottom of the screen. But in the current iteration a conversation is a completley separate screen, and you have ONE tab to hold all conversation dialogues.

So to switch convos from one with Pedah to Doug Goldring I have to:
say bye to Doug :’(
click menu, then click out to the main skype screen
scroll to the dialogues tab
click (or double click, I forget) on Pedah’s convo
say hi to Pedah :)

Meanwhile, Windows Live Messenger gets that done with one click of the dpad.

Mini rant over.
