So Long Old Friend…

IMG_0590 Over the holidays, while visiting with family, I started talking with my sister-in-law about mobile devices.  During the course of the conversation, she mentioned that she was looking for something to replace her antiquated Palm device.

I started thinking of devices I could suggest which might be useful to her.  She wanted something that was not connected to the Internet, and really only needed to be able to sync her calendar so she could check her schedule on the go.  Before any words could escape my lips, it suddenly occurred to me: since I began using the Mogul last spring, I have hardly touched my Dell Axim x50v.  I told myself I would hang onto it and use it for testing, but I really have never done that.  It (along with the treasure trove of cases and other accessories) more or less has been collecting dust and taking up space for the last six months or so.

The Axim is the perfect device for her.  It is one of the more powerful devices out there, is incredibly expansive with both an SD card slot and a CF card slot, and since she is not a power user, the difference between Windows Mobile 2003SE and Windows Mobile 5/6 will hardly be noticed by her.

Almost without thinking, I told my sister-in-law she could have it.  Maybe I was overcome with the Christmas spirit.  Or maybe I really just do not like to see good gadgets go unused.  This is the second time I have given away a Windows Mobile device (the first was a Motorola Q, which I gave to my friend’s wife).  To be honest, I really like watching people enjoy these devices which I no longer need to use.

The Axim is a little different for me.  It was my introduction to the world of Windows Mobile devices.  Sure, I had the original HP Jornada, which I got way back in 2000, but it went mostly unused, prompting my wife to dub it the "$500 Solitaire Machine".  The Axim was different.  I used the heck out of it.  For the better part of a year, it was my sole device for writing reviews here at JAMM.

So, I am a little nostalgic at seeing it go.  At the same time, however, I am not using it anymore at all.  My sister-in-law, however, can clearly use a device like the Axim, and giving it to her will save her family a few hundred dollars which they can use to spoil their one year old daughter.  So, will I miss the Axim?  Yes, in the sense that it was my first device.  But in another sense, I know it is going to a good home, and will be used well.

So long old friend…

Wow – all I can say is: How Could You??? My X51V does not think well of you, at all …

Mostly because I knew it was staying in the family. :) I would never have given it to just any stranger. Plus, I knew my sister-in-law could really use it a lot more than I was. Still, it will not be easy to box it up and send it off to her.

I just hope it wont end like my DASH. I still cry thinking about it. Anyway, not sure if you guys know, but I gave it to my wife when I got the iPhone, and it didn’t even last 6 months. Yes, she lost it, and some M!@%*^%$* that found it didn’t even have the class to return it.

Sigh…

Doug, Chris Leckness just emailed me and he’s distraught! You’ll have to hand in your keys to aximsite :( , oh and my axim did an involuntary soft reset in utter shock :p

Wow, Pedah. I am surprised your Axim didn’t crap out an SD card or something. :)

Anyway, my sister-in-law is a chemist, which means my Axim will be directly used to help fight cancer. I can’t say I ever used it for anything that noble. :)

Hey! You coulda given that to me! My iPaq was ready for its final resting place (on my Electronics Shelf of No Return) when I went looking for an Axim only to find that Dell had just discontinued it! So off I went in search of more pda goodness, eventually ending up at sites like yours and GearDiary among others, and now I’m just a news junkie with no time to actually use a device. :P

Oh, and I guess your sister-in-law actually is a better choice than someone who’s only posted a couple of comments. But still… :)

Sorry, Danny. I agree, that was terribly inconsiderate of me. :) Tell you what. If you can demonstrate that you actually intended to use if for something more noble than finding a cure for cancer…I’ll consider changing my mind. :)

Okay, something more noble than the cure for cancer…

Let’s see… think, think… think, think…

Alright, how about that I have my scriptures and Sunday School materials loaded on my iPaq? Saving the souls of humankind has to count for something, right?

No, wait! Something even nobler! How about if I promise to transfer my Dig-Dug, PacMan, Tetris, etc., over to the new one to keep my son quiet during church so everyone else can enjoy their Sunday worship? :)

And thanks for reconsidering, but I’m actually just hoping HP will release their iPaq 210 sometime THIS year…

Dan,

There are some members of the JAMM team who may have been swayed by that argument. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. :)

I agree, that HP 210 does look nice. Hopefully they will release it soon.
