For all of you travellers!
So I’ve got this guy that works for me, and he’s got OCD [obsessive compulsive disorder], seriously he’s got, at the moment seven batteries for his phone! Seriously, it’s a really old Nokia, he’s hand painted it purple, and he’s got seven batteries for it. He carries the batteries, in a stack, separated with hand cut, cardboard pieces, with quite a few rubber bands to hold them in a block. Does that sound like overkill? Well if you’re in the US, and relate to this, and travel a lot by air, you better get some therapy, quick!
Effective January 1, 2008, the following rules apply to the spare lithium batteries you carry with you in case the battery in a device runs low:
• Spare batteries are the batteries you carry separately from the devices they power. When batteries are installed in a device, they are not considered spare batteries.
• You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage
• You may bring spare lithium batteries with you in carry-on baggage – see our spare battery tips and how-to sections to find out how to pack spare batteries safely!
• Even though we recommend carrying your devices with you in carry-on baggage as well, if you must bring one in checked baggage, you may check it with the batteries installed.

No Lithium batteries in checked baggage…makes sense. There are alot of cheaply manufactured knockoff batteries out there that can cause a fire. If a battery were to heat up in a carry on, it will be noticed very soon and taken care of. If a battery sets fire in the cargo hold, it won’t be noticed until the plane is on its way down. Hope not.
