Working retail, you see a lot of cool toys and gadgets – though usually not the bleeding edge of technology, you certainly do see the cutting edge. During the past couple of weeks working at my new job at a computer retail store, I noticed one item that had a particular popularity. The Kingston Universal Mobility Kit. Though we will not be talking about this specific item, we will be discussing what made that said "mobility kit" so popular – the Ultra Slim T-Flash / microSD reader.

USB Fever, a fine distributor of USB products, has a nearly identical product which lacks branding and comes in a different color plastic. Racking up high scores over at Gear Diary, this little USB microSD reader now makes its rounds at the JAMM review labs.

Still available for only a penny + $2.99 shipping (until January 1, 2008 or while supplies last), this is certainly the hottest little gadget in town! Come join us and see how functionality and simplicity are an award winning combo that brings not only results but pure satisfaction.

The first Ultra Slim T-Flash / Micro SD reader that I received was defective and would occasionally read and then just fritz out. Shipping for the replacement took 10 days – not bad considering it was being shipped from Hong Kong.

So, first impressions of the working one – this is neat! It’s compact and works as a keychain accessory (though I would not try using the flimsy looking hook to attach it to my keychain). To extend / extract the functioning unit from the blue plastic shell, you can:

1) Use the string and pull it towards the direction of the slit.

2) Use your fingernail to slide the unit out of its housing.

So, now we just insert our microSD card making the metallic contacts of the card touch the metallic contacts of the USB reader…

….and insert it into a USB port – viola! Hello removable drive.

As always remember to actually disconnect your USB devices safely after use lest you risk the possibility of corrupting your microSD data.

Safe Remove

Storage is simple, just reinsert the USB portion into the housing (carefully – don’t just try and yank the string as that doesn’t work) and you are ready to go!
