London Cabbies:1 – Latest GPS Technology: 0

The BBC pitted the wits of a black cab driver against the latest GPS technology in an effort to find out whether man or gadget rules the mean streets of rush-hour London. And … although the TomTom GO 720 won the first round, Andy the cabbie completely p0wned the Sat-Nav.

I lived in London for a lot of years, so this news does not surprise me at all – but it is still great to see and brings a big smile!

Black cab drivers do spend a mountain of time going through ‘the knowledge’ to learn London streets inside out – nice to see that all that hands-on knowledge beats the latest tech in zooming (well, probably more like meandering) round London streets.  The cabbie beat the Tech-show presenter and his GPS by a whopping 27 minutes in their showdown.

I wonder how much they paid the cabbie to take part in the test though.  My experience in my last few years over there is that black cab drivers had become a little like supermodels – there were a lot of them who didn’t want to take anything less than a 20 pound fare – not cool – maybe I’ll root for the TomTom next time …
