Zune Pass - 10 Free Songs Every Month!!!

MS is changing, or I should say adding, to their Zune Pass music subscription service. The way the Zune Pass works is that you can download an unlimited amount of music from the Zune Marketplace for a monthly fee of $14.99. If you stop your subscription, then you no longer have access to that music. The program allows you to try out all kinds of music with no extra cost to you. I’m sure many of us have purchased a CD that had one song we really liked, and then we find out that we don’t care for any of the other music on the album. So, you wind-up with a $14 song. Zune Pass helps to avoid things like that, as well as giving you a huge music collection. The new bonus is that you can now keep 10 songs every month forever. These are 10 songs of your choosing, so you have complete freedom. The price of the Zune Pass does not change. MS sets this up by giving each Zune Pass account 10 credits every month. Credits do not transfer month to month, so use ‘em or lose ‘em. I am not currently a Zune Pass subscriber, but with this new offer, I am very tempted to sign up.

Flash Zunes on Sale - Get’em While They’re Hot

There are few things that make me happier than fun electronic toys on sale. In that respect, MS knows the way to this girl’s heart. Just in time for the holiday season, all of the flash Zunes, and some Zune accessories, will see a price drop. The sale starts on Nov. 19 in the US, and Nov. 21 in Canada. You can also order your Zune through Zune Originals, and will see the same price break. With the money you save, the art work and etching are almost free.

Zune 4 is now $99. Zune 8 is $138, and the Zune 16 is $179.

I hope this means that we might see a price drop on the hard drive Zunes. Can anyone say blue Zune 120?

MalWare and Windows Mobile?

The threat of Virus/MalWare attack has been almost non existent for Windows mobile devices, but does the uptake of WinMo devices by enterprise users, makes it more of a target in this day and age?
You could cripple a company dependant on Windows CE devices for mobile communication, and stock control, with a well engineered worm, but how to deploy it to those devices. Well there are covert ways to do it.
All of us WinMo users are pretty smug about attacks like this that are, well, common with the desktop/laptop counterpart of the OS. The incidence seems low for WinMo and a quick search would still seem to indicate that.
It seems highly unlikely that you are going to be affected by problems over the air, but in a new twist, it may just be the accessories you use that introduce the problem. Long known with hard drives for PC’s, the inclusion of a little nasty, has been well documented. You don’t have to go very far to find these occurrences.
Now the infection is coming to a storage card near you!

Quick Look: King’s Corners

The simpler the rules, the greater the challenge. Hey, it may not be Newtonian, but I think we can call this the First Law of Gaming. The most difficult games to win are always the ones with simple rules which make you say regrettable things like, “this will only take a minute.” The easy games, on the other hand, tend to be the ones with complex rules and complicated graphics and animation. So, I suppose it should be taken as a compliment when I say that I have never met a game with simpler rules than King’s Corner. And, true to what we will now call The First Law of Gaming, it is an incredibly challenging game to win. Like Brandon said, this is a quick game. It can take less than a minute to finish a game, yet you will soon find yourself playing for hours and hours…and mostly losing the game. Simple? Yes. Easy? Not so much.

You know, I’ve never really known what to think about the Celio Redfly, and I was offered one once but I’d already gotten the Eee and really didn’t see the need for another little notebook, and especially one that wasn’t a stand alone device. When I gather my thoughts though, and actually consider the idea, that a Redfly and a WinMo device could actually replace your laptop/netbook, and give you a truly mobile device solution, for a budget wise price.

Redfly, I mean Celio, have announced two new models of the Redfly, that may allow you to realise your dreams of true digital mobility, without a wallet deflating pin prick.

More “My Little Tank” News from Astraware

In case you missed yesterday’s news, Astraware released “My Little Tank” for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Well, today, even more people get to join in the MLT party!!! Astraware released it for S60, as well as Blackberry, for the first time today. For Palm OS and WM users, don’t worry, you are not being left out in the cold. MLT has been updated to include newer WM and Palm devices, and they have added 20 new levels. That gives the game a total of 80 levels!!! “My Little Tank” is an arcade shooter game were you play the role of a mini-tank out to defend your base while destroying enemy tanks, radar stations, and bases. Plus, you will run into all kinds of terrain changes from snow and swamps to plains and deserts. If you already have a registered copy of MLT, the upgrade is free. If not, it can be purchased from Astraware for $9.99. Its also available for the sale price of $4.95, if you are a member of Club Astraware. Honestly, for $4.95, I am going to go home and download this game. I love the little strategy games, and this will be great entertainment for traveling or waiting in line during the holiday shopping season.

Now the Axim has been mourned for long enough as a powerful WinMo device, and a lot of people have been looking at and acquiring new HTC devices that have upped the ante. Especially in the RAM stakes, but what about processor speed? Check out these Specs

Memory — 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash storage

Google Voice App for iPhone, Amazing!

Well for what ever reason this app was delayed, and I was pretty harsh about it. Well team member Dan Cohen dropped a Twit today, to let me know that it’s finally released. His reaction to the application…

For some reason iTunes did not indicate that an update was available so I removed the app from my iPhone, downloaded the Google app in the App Store and resynced my iPhone. There it was- real voice enabled search on my iPhone.

With the voice search you can choose whether or not to include contacts, previous searches and websites. You can also determine whether or not you want suggestions.

You can also launch a wide range of Google’s apps right from the mobile app- a nice extra.

The real “Wow” though is the voice search and it works amazingly well.

I am still quite surprised that this is being released on the iPhone, before the G1 Android, but it looks like the nice app that the pre-release talk pointed too.

Review: Jawbone 2

If you’ve walked into an electronics store in the past few months, you’ve probably seen a Bluetooth headset display with a Jawbone 2 front and center. The New Jawbone by Aliph is one of the few mobile accessories to hit the mainstream. People who couldn’t name a single headset manufacturer, including Aliph, recognize the Jawbone.

The Jawbone is aspirational earwear, coveted by people who know the $130 price tag. By my count, this makes the Jawbone the first Bluetooth headset to become a popular status symbol. In my time as a reviewer at JAMM I’ve had plenty of people ask me about the latest gadget I’m trying out, but Aliph’s flagship headset is the only product so far that elicits tones of awe before I explain what it does.

When you pull out your credit card for a Jawbone 2, you are not simply buying a Bluetooth headset. Sorry folks, you’re not going to get a full review out of me on this one on opening day, but I can tell you I had a chance to spend sometime with King’s Corners during the beta period, and its actually quite a bit of fun. Now, this is not a game you’re going to spend hours and hours straight playing (maybe)… its one you’re going to find you spend a lot of time playing in small time segments like when you’re waiting for your doctor, or a friend. It’s the perfect time waster game where you only have a couple minutes between events. Anyway the game is out now, retails at 99 cents (iTunes), and frankly is well worth the buck!

Google gets a love tap from Apple!

Well, love tap may be a little tame, a bit more like what they do at the abattoir to your next unsuspecting steak dinner. Hitting the news earlier this week, was a new app for the iPhone, from Google and what better way to illustrate it.

Than to send you to a look at a video of the app being used. [Update: It looks like the video has been pulled, and according to CrunchGear this one's been hit on the head.]

The question has been going around this week, that the fruit company is building a search engine, and this may seem like confirmation for lots of people. How does that SDK thing go , if it replicates any of the native functions, or intended native functions of the iPhone, it’s a no go zone in the app store.

But why not just say it? Why all the skulking? Could Apple be taking a page from Stalin’s playbook? The “hushing up inconvenient news” page, not the “purge of millions of intelligentsia page,” obviously.

It’s a big No from Apple to Google, are they scared of Android? Or is this really confirmation of an iPhone based search engine. Why doesn’t Apple like Google?

Review: Soul Trapper

Alright, so this review took me longer than it should have. You really shouldn’t experiment with multiple machine syncing when you’re reviewing what is essentially an RPG. I was about a quarter through the game and I ended up destroying my save file by syncing all my applications all over again. Ugh!

In any case, I’m back on track now and ready to give you fine folk the heads-up on Soul Trapper for the iPhone. This one’s pretty different from any other title we’ve seen on the App Store, as it’s a fully voice-driven adventure with very little graphical input. But is it any fun? Or is it more of an interactive audio book?

Huge Review: JAVOedge Back Covers for iPhone 3G

What do you do when a box shows up at your door one day and you haven’t been expecting it? Well, you do what I do when stuff from JAVOedge shows up - you rip it open like its Christmas morning. This time though I was in for a HUGE shock - this particular box (which again I wasn’t expecting) had not one, not two but over twenty cases in it! Naturally, I sent an email to my friends at JAVOedge and made sure they really meant to send this to me - because frankly I thought maybe they made a mistake. Turns out I was wrong, they really did mean to send all these cases to me, and they really did want me to review them and better yet they want me to give them away! So, I will be doing that soon - I’m just not quite sure yet how to do that, so make sure you keep an eye on the site because I’ll figure out how to do it soon.

Well, enough talking! Let’s get started!!

Microsoft App Store, Online.

Yes it’s finally here, Micro$oft have finally gone online in the US with their Store. I’m going to have to admit, that I assumed an online store from Microsoft, would focus on windows mobile, but we all know what happens when we assume…

It’s definitely not a Windows Mobile application store, it is your cloud conduit to all things windows except Mobile . I would have thought that the Zune store/marketplace would have been sucked up into this vortex, as well, but the Zune is only available as entertainment hardware at the store.

The store is almost everything windows PC, except for XBox, Zune and games. Go figure?

It offers great advantages for the greener consumers out there, no packaging, you can get your software over the air, and do away with all of those great big plastic boxes that M$ still insist on putting a DVD/installation CD in. With the store you create an account and buy online, and all of your details are there, you can re-download, and recover product keys at your leisure. You can still request the hard copy of your software, M$ still offers this antiquarian service, although they are moving further into the Cloud.

M$ can’t hope to emulate iTunes with this portal, let’s face it they are late to the party, but if you are a PC, this is probably welcome news, sorry to see, as far as OS’s go, Vista is the be all and end all, my XP Eee is spitting at me as I type this

Doug: I had a nice surprise in the mail the other day when I tore open a Fed Ex envelope to find the HTC Touch Pro. By coincidence, as you may have noticed, Lauren and Sue (for you Gear Diary readers, they are both contributors at JAMM) both also picked up the HTC Touch Pro earlier this month. So, we thought it would be fun for all of us to share our thoughts together on this new device. The Touch Pro is the latest offering from HTC and the successor to my previous phone, the Sprint Mogul. We’ll take a closer look at all of the features of the phone, including the new Touch Flo 3D interface. Today, though, we just wanted to take a quick look at what is in the box and share a few preliminary thoughts.
