Quick Review: Atomic Cannon 3
The very first review I wrote here at JAMM was Isotope 244′s Atomic Cannon, a remake of one of my favorite games from the old Apple II+. In fact, I enjoyed Atomic Cannon so much, it is one of the few games which has remained on my device, long after the review was completed. Of course, when I learned that Isotope 244 was updating this game, I saw the perfect opportunity to update my review.
Since this is an update of my previous review, you will probably want to go ahead and read that first. Go ahead, I’ll wait here. Just follow this link to my Atomic Cannon review. Then, come back and we will talk about what is new and improved.
The most noticeable upgrade in the new version are all of the new weapons. There are 18 new weapons, including airburst weapons, mines, jetpacks, and many upgrades of your favorite weapons and weapons categories.
By far, my favorite of the new weapons has to be the sentry tower (a little hard to see, but the sentry tower is right behind the enemy tank in this picture). Launching a sentry tower will fire a remote gun, which you can hopefully place near your opponent. This will give you an extra shot (the sentry tower does not have a choice of ammunition types) each round.
Additionally, Isotope 244 has added several new gameplay elements. There are now supply drops, small boxes which are parachuted into the battle. Maneuver your tank to the supply drop and you can obtains credits, health, or weapons. This is a fantastic way to obtain equipment which you otherwise may not have been able to afford. Be careful though, some of these boxes may also contain traps which can harm your tank.
There are also new defensive options, including reinforced armor, hazmat armor, walls, and bunkers. Building a wall will place a tower of bricks almost immediately in front of your tank. It makes it a little more difficult to fire, but a lot more difficult for your opponent to lob one in on you. A bunker is simply a reinforced wall.
The most impressive feature of the new version is the newly implemented game lobby. From here, you can play online and cross platform with opponents from across the world. Because it uses a game lobby format, it is easy to use. Simply select the network option to log into the game lobby. From there, you can create your own game or join an existing game. Up top 16 people can play at a time.
Unfortunately, I found the game lobby deserted, but not to worry. You can always create your own online game and invite your friends to join in the fun. Atomic Cannon is uniquely designed for this format. It is definitely a better game when played against other live opponents rather than a computer. Since it is cross platform, there is never a need to worry about whether you will be compatible with your opponents’ devices.
Of course, in addition to all of this, Atomic Cannon still contains the destructible landscape, real time smoke trails, dozens of weapons, each with its own unique explosion and properties, and all of the other amazing features we have grown to love.
Atomic Cannon, and its predecessor games, have long been among my favorite games. This is one of the few games which has remained on my device after the review was finished. The latest update is fantastic because it keeps everything I enjoyed in the game…only better. Love the weapons? There are more of them. Love the surprises? There are more of them? And that doesn’t even touch on the new defenses, sentry towers, supply drops, and even the multiplayer online game. Whew. I am exhausted just mentioning it all. But don’t take my word for it. Check it out today. Just be ready to be "blown away"!

Unfortunately, at the time, the multiplayer still doesn’t work on Windows Mobile – only on desktop Windows and Mac. I’ll let you all know when it’s fixed.

Thanks, Werner. I didn’t realize it wasn’t working. I figured people were just slow finding it,.
Wish I had known that.
