Edible Mobile Phone, What the?

Incredibly far fetched, or reality, that’s the question? Imagine your plane goes down on some remote island and your the only survivor. What can you depend upon, that all of the corpses will have at least one mobile device, and if they were edible, would provide sustenance for quite a while, depending on the size of the plane. Is this convergence gone mad, well, yes. It’s not likely to happen but this Nokia 1100 replica is a biscuit. image

Apparently this is the preferred mobile option in the Ukraine, where food is more important than communication. Most of us take our mobile devices for granted these days, and see them as essential parts of our daily lives, feel we couldn’t live without them actually. When did you last worry about where your next meal was coming from?

I have read a few things lately that take the shine off of the OLPC (one laptop per child) program, are critical of it’s effectiveness. Then this article by John Dvorak from PCmag really, made me, well, uneasy.

Does anyone but me see the OLPC XO-1 as an insulting “let them eat cake” sort of message to the world’s poor?

Then it came to me, hopefully the principle behind the OLPC program, “give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime”. I don’t think you can criticise the OLPC program, as overly altruistic, it is just a different focus on the same problem, and seen by many as less than a band – aid. Not a quick, reactionary fix to an immediate problem, but a long term solution that offers benefits way into the future.

I suppose we should give thanks at this time of year, because we’re in places that are safe, warm, wholesome and tech enabled, and remember that many people aren’t. If we can’t see that we need to throw as many resources into relieving these problems at home and abroad, we are missing the point by a mile. It seems the OLPC program is too sophisticated for some people to see how useful it would be, but lot’s of people like to poo poo anything new that they don’t understand!

We all need to be aware of ways to alleviate these social problems, from sponsoring a child overseas to volunteering for a local charity. Wanting the world to be a better place for everybody is not an unachievable thing, it’s just something we need to work at, and I challenge you, to do it! Make a difference in your world !
